Help!? WY public land DIY elk hunting suggestions for 2014
« on: October 04, 2013, 11:51:38 PM »
Next year I plan to make a trip to WY for a DIY hunt on public land for elk in September. Was curious if there was any pointers or suggestions out there.  People to call? Who to talk too? We plan to hunt walk-in only gates. Mountain bike in mile after mile after mile for a rewarding hunt. Not asking for secret spots just curious if anyone out there had any suggestions.

Thanks guys

My hunting buddies just returned from WY on thier general bull hunt, they shot 3 elk, one with a bow the last day of the archery season and lost it! Went back with the rifle the next day and never saw the bull again, it was the biggest bull my friend has ever shot! The other two bulls were a really big 6x6 and a rag 5. Pretty darn good for a general elk hunt on foot in a unit they had never hunted.

First: how many points do you already have? Good archery hunts take on average 2-10 points to draw (depending on area). Second: where do you want to hunt, Western, Central, or Southern Wy? Third: General tag or limited quota tag, General tag in Sept gets you into some rifle hunting. Lastly: Since you say Sept, are you planning a rifle rut or archery season? I only ask all of these questions because they are questions I have been asking myself and have been asked by my buddy who lives out there. There are literally hundreds of options of hunt choices. First and foremost, I say pick an area, look at how many points it takes to draw, and then start planning. I'm looking at 2-3 more years before I realistically stand a fighting chance at drawing my preferred hunt in September for archery.
Wishing I was fishing...or in Wyoming

Ive hunted over there for 4 seasons now and I have not drawn a tag yet but I buy a left over cow calf tag and have had great sussess filling the tag while waiting for the tag of my choice.  Ive gotten to know 3 areas pretty well and now know which unit I want to hunt for bulls.
I would suggest putting in for the general tag first and a cow tag as a second option.  You will probably draw the cow tag for sure.
You might think about renting some horses and really getting back into the country...I heard the throughfare is a spatacular unit but would require a guide.
