Montana Bull
« on: October 05, 2013, 10:45:07 PM »
Just got back for a week long elk hunt in Montana.  The weather was cool and the bulls were in full rut.  The very first evening we spotted a bull in the flats about a mile away, after he bedded we made our stalk.  When we got to the small hill we were surprised that the bull was actually asleep.  His head was off to the side and only one antler was showing and it had 6 points and was nice.  After slipping in close the bull woke up and moved around in his bed and we noticed that he was broke just above his browtines.  That stalked ended day one.

Day two started out great, We wanted to head up into a drainage and as we started that way in the dark the bulls were already bugling.  Six different bulls were screaming and it was amazing.  After daylight hit we had closed the distance on the bulls and I was very close to a screamer.  I slowly crept up the draw and spotted him on the hill, I nocked a arrow and came to full draw as the bull is bugling and walking but just my luck he stops behind a tree and no shot was present.  He keep walking ahead and never stopped again.

Day Three.  I headed into the same drainage as the night before and had three different bulls bugling on our way into our spot.  We reached our spot and sat until daylight and the bulls were hot.  First light came and we moved in on this big 6 by 7 and his lone cow.  We got within 100 yards and the bull was running back and forth screaming at the other bulls.  He never stood still and he followed his cow up the ridge.  I went up the ridge and started to follow him up and was slowly gaining yardage when I look to my right and see just the top of a bulls rack cresting the hill.  I drop to my knees and nock a arrow and the bull is heading straight towards the screaming bull.  He passes me at 35 yards and all i can see is his head, he goes right down the draw i came up from and as he disappears i get up move 10 yards to the edge and come to full draw and with one cow call he stops and turns to look at me giving me a perfect 55 yard broadside shot.

I release and watch my arrow center punch the bull and watch him bolt down the draw.  I sat down and waited for a bit before going to look for blood and my arrow.  I find the arrow right away and it was stuck in a downed tree and had blood on it.  After the 80 yard bloodtrail my Savora Broadhead made quick work and  I see the bull down and I was so pumped.  After some pics and fist pumps it was time to start the packout.  We cut him up and had to pack him out a few miles.  Thanks again Radsav cant wait for the next one  :chuckle:

Good job as always.  Be careful telling distance as the internet police might have you arrested for shooting 55 yards :chuckle:
