« on: January 10, 2014, 11:11:51 AM »
My daughter will be shooting a mathews jewel bow set at 45 lbs how do we figure out lethal/ethical range ? Understanding shot placement is number one/ sharp broadheads but how do you figure? Is 30yrds to far? 40yrds? Any help would be great.

Age/draw length/ Arrow speed... I would guess 30 yards for a kid is plenty.

try this

KINETIC ENERGY    HUNTING USAGE
25 ft. lbs.    Small Game
25-41 ft. lbs.    Medium Game (Deer, Antelope)
42-65 ft. lbs.    Large Game (Elk, Black Bear, Boar)
65 ft. lbs.    Big Game (Cape Buffalo, Grizzly)
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

What animal? At what distance can she consistently hit an 8" circle?
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

 :yeah:

The set up will kill a deer as long as she can hit her mark....even at 50 yards.   Not saying that is the range I would let her shoot.

Don't know if anyone can answer this question for you / her except you and her.

My dad gave me 10 arrows.  I started at 5 yards.  I could move back in 5 yard increments when all 10 arrows were in a small pie plate 6".  This didn't mean pull the arrows and try again.....it meant first shot all arrows in the plate.  If I missed on the first arrow I had to shoot the next nine and then start over.   Needless to say I shot a lot that first year and became very accurate.  I worked out to 35 or 40 yards my first year.

I was shooting a 45 lbs bear II bow with heavy aluminium arrows.  I killed a my first deer at 30 yards.

Hope this helps

All of my kids (ALL 6 OF THEM) had to starting shooting at 15 yd. They had a 6" Diameter target. When they could hit it everytime they got to move out at 5 yd increments until they were deadly out to 30 yds. The reward of shooting past 30 yds was hard to come by . I would not let them hunt until they could put all of the arrows in the target every time.Eventually shrinking the target to 3". All of my sons were shooting 60 lbs by the time they were 12 years old. One of my sons could pull over 80 lbs by the time he was 14. All are very proficient bow hunters today. Practice good practice. Be patient and learn the equipment so you know it in the dark. Another thing that will make her a better archer is to learn how to tear down and put the bow back together. It will help her understand the fundamentals and maybe sometime help in the field with a mechanical failure. Understanding tuning, how, when and why a bow may go out of tune is also important. My kids all were very interested in working on their own equipment.

Consistent accuracy thru practice and you be the judge. 45lbs on one of today's bows will kill about anything you can hit well.

Just sign her up for archery talk. Just being a member there makes you incapable of making a mistake.  You will never miss and your average groups will be 1" at 100yds. The average hunter will have to kiss your boots and rings because of your pure awesomeness!!!!!  :chuckle:

Shooting at a target is different than shooting at an animal.
Even rifle hunters who put in 1" groups at 200 yards at the range miss animals at 50 yards.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

let me throw a little something in too !  :chuckle: We all talk about fast bows and how far we can kill something but on top of all of this I think you should think about how important it is to make sure you are shooting the sharpest broadhead out there ..there are many ..some guys leave broadheads laying around for years or leave them in their quivers long long periods of time ...that a no no ...store them in something in the off season so they stay sharp ! Sharp broadheads and lighter poundage bows are deadly  :twocents:
