Winthrop Bound For Modern - Anyone Else?
« on: October 07, 2013, 01:35:08 PM »
We're heading up toward Winthrop (GMU218/GMU224) Friday morning for the modern season...  Anyone else headed that way - might try to meet up with folks for a beer after we all tag out  :).

Twisp, Winthrop and ended up in Mazama. We were to the north side of the highway the whole time on Thursday. I think it was Beaver Canyon or creek where we saw the wolves right out of Twisp. I don't live over there, so I can't give you the specific names. Black Pine Lake was on Wednesday.

I haven't hunted up there since I was a kid. Kind of miss hunting that area, maybe next year after a good summer of scouting and relearning the roads.

Hehe u guys crack me up! I'll be up high around beaver like I have been for the last 10 years. Last year we saw 50-60 deer. No shooter bucks tho, which was uncommon. Lots of spikes and 2 pts, hopefully a few of em are back in the area this year! Also saw a cow and calf moose! Don't get caught up in all the doom and gloom, u just gotta find the right draws! Maybe the wolves only eat the deer near the roads??? Or in town... Good luck up there I'm sure SOMEONE will get 1...  :chuckle:

You and 10K other people.  If you get off the beaten path you should be in good shape.  Stay out of site of the road hunters and you will have better luck.  Many individuals will put on 100's of miles and call that a good days worth of hunting.   :dunno:

Don't get me wrong. 50-60 deer over 5-6 days isn't spectacular but is not to bad... the hunting over there has become a shell of what it was in the old days, but its like that everywhere! Its still a good hunt if u put in some effort and USE your glass. I grew up hunting the chiwawa and its the same way. I still hunt the opener there with my wife and don't see near the deer #'s I did 20 years ago, but tell me where u do? We still do ok. I found that showing up in the methow mid week is far more productive than opening weekend. It is bat *censored* crazy on the opener... ill admit to that. hence why i stay in the chiwawa! Sometimes ya just gotta get off the forum, sack up and hunt. As my dad would say: the deer are where u find em!

Completely agree.  Get off the roads.  And actually hunt you will be successful.  If you want it to happen you have to make it happen.

There is a bunch of people in there on opening weekend, but by Monday they have almost all headed home.   By Wednesday last year we had the place to our selves. I tagged out on Thursday. Let them get the deer stirred up. Just sit and watch.
