Need a shot Gun parkerized
« on: October 07, 2013, 04:26:20 PM »
Picked up a winchester 101 over/under 12 gauge made in the late 1940's.  It is  in need of some TLC,  wood and inside of barrels are very good,  Out side barrels are pitted but they still ring true.  I'm looking for a gun smith in the Battle Ground area who can Parkerize the metal for me any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd leave it as is or just remove any surface rust and leave the patina intake.

No surface rust, just pitted from neglect.  The gal I bought it from kept it in a gun case in the garage.

Once you refinish, re-blu or otherwise alter a classic gun from its original configuration you lessen its historical value and it is no longer a classic.   Pits, rust, scratches and dents are just part of a gun’s character and history.  If they don’t interfere with function it’s best to leave them as is, IMHO.

Some people are more concerned with preserving THEIR gun and keeping it in the field than its value. Maybe that gun isn't terribly collectible. I have several mausers and a sporterized 03A3 that have been re-finnished

I purchased this one to restore and be a shooter for a nephew who wants to learn how to trap shoot and do some hunting with it.  I do a little collecting  :chuckle: and in the shape it is in it is about a 300.00 dollar shotgun, just right for a kid to learn on.  if I can figure out how to PM I will contact Doug 6xC

Is Parkerizing the same finish as is on the Remington 870 Express Models?

If so, it would be a waste of money. Bare metal wouldn't rust much faster IMO.

I only paid 100.00 for it.  If I were going to keep it I would leave it alone.  But you know how young boys are the toys have to look cool, so I will have it restored.

you firm on a BG smith?  Mel Doyle in Idaho is great.  ship him your gun, he does it and ships it back.  no fuss, no muss.

Go to the very top menu on your screen, click on members go to the D Section and go to page 80 or 81 and you will see his name. Once there click on his name and it will take you to his profile. When you get to the profile go to the far left side and look in the list menu, you will see an option to "Send Personal Message"
