Girlfriend gets her first bear
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:56:07 PM »
This hunt started way back in May in N ID during the spring bear season. We started a bait and could not get the bears we had coming in to show up in the daylight needless to say after alot of evenings of seeing nothing the spring season came to a close. Fast forward to Sept we started another bait in the same area and had a bear on it the first week and in the daylight, we bumped him off the bait the first evening. The 2nd night he showed up just before dark and couldnt get a shot before he left. Having to climb down and knowing he was going to wind us I knew we would have issues getting him back in the daylight. My prediction was right, we got no more pics of him during the daylight for the next 2 1/2 weeks we needed another bear to show on the bait to create competition for the food.Few days later we got  a huge boar to come in, but all night pics and the other one was still coming in the night. Evening of Oct 5th was going to be the last sit on the bait as we had to work then we were headed to ID for a elk hunt for 10 days. As we sit in the stand we had to endure 4 bulls screaming and tons of cows mewing for hours 100 yards from our stand. Sun had set and I was all but content that nothing was going to show as usual for the last 2 1/2 weeks. I see out of the corner of my eye my girlfriend reaching for her bow! I see nothing..I ask here is there a bear? yea...He was behind a tree I couldnt see..he comes in nervously we hear crashing and busting coming at us forever we are thinking this is the big bear coming at us..we wait...its a huge herd of elk they spook the bear off and come under the stand and sniff the tree spikes and proceed past us crashing thru the brush feeding. Light fading fast I knew the bear had to be close still he pops back out broadside and she made a great shot as the bear crashed down the hill. There was almost 0 blood to trail and looking for it in the pitch black wasnt working so we backed out knowing it was going to be in the 20's overnight..walked right to it in the am.

I'm confused. I thought it said you were baiting in Idaho but then had to leave to go to Idaho for a 10 day elk hunt?  :dunno:

Hunts Idaho near Spokane for bear and elk and he drew an elk tag for a unit in central Idaho.

Beautiful bear.  Great picture.

Sorry to hear there are so many elk messing up your hunt   :chuckle:

I would enjoy baiting so I could be selective with bear harvest.  I have a hard time finding boars.

Idaho is a big state. Bear hunting and elk hunting 4 hours apart.
