Anyone been in the St John area for modern? Steptoe gmu
« on: October 08, 2013, 10:29:23 AM »
I did a lot of driving last weekend looking for land down south of Spokane. I found a little feel free to hunt but mostly private farm land as you all know I am sure. My question is are there alot of people pushing deer around on opening day down south? My plan was to hunker down somewhere on my little available feel free to hunt or blm land and I hope someone pushes something to me. I know up north it seems like the right thing to do  is get way of the roads and sit down somewhere. Next year I will be on top of it and reserve some private land with the wdfw reservation system. All the wriiten permission land must be full cause no land owners have answered to many of my calls. I just needed to get on it quicker next year. I pheasant hunt south and always wanted to go after a big mully and I saw a few last weekend! Good Luck and be safe out there this weekend everyone!

I've hunted that unit and 142 for the last 10 years and all I can say is resist the temptation to get up and move around or at worst go back to your truck around 11-2PM. Commit to staying there all day. I shot my buck around 1PM on the opener last year b/c everyone headed back to there truck/home/lunch and the deer keyed in on it and started to move to refuge areas once they were pushed around. Give yourself a good vantage point to glass. Wait for the deer to move around and then stalk in for the shot. I've shot some nice bucks in the middle of the day.

I say ditto to all of the above.  too many people is the reason for shortened seasons, more permit and less general seasons, more private property, more dummies screwing things up for us good guys,  etc.  I remember in the late 50's the deer season was a month long and you could shoot anything.  you could shoot any bull in the blues.  mike w

Hunted that area my whole life as my dad and grandpa has before me. IT WILL LOOK LIKE A PUMPKIN PATCH OPENING WEEKEND! ALso like you noticed that unit is 98% private ground and the chances of getting on to private land in this area is slim to none!
Avid ARCHERY deer and elk hunter.
Coyote killer in the off season.
MX Racer simi retired to practice when I can.
