Modern Deer in the General Area of Mt. Vernon
« on: October 08, 2013, 01:27:56 PM »
I'm new to washington, only been in the state since the 16th of September, and I would really like to take a deer this season. I have minimal deer hunting experiance, however I have hunted small game in my home state of Kentucky. I'm in the military, and my family and I have just PCS'ed from Honolulu to Everett Naval Station, and have moved into a home in Mt. Vernon.

I have a Kentucky hunter ed' card, and I have completed the Wa. hunter ed' course just for general knowledge. I'm physically fit, willing to drive and work, I have my own hunting gear, but I don't own a tree stand. The rifle I'm planning on using is a Sharps 45-70 if thats of interest to you.

Thanks for your time,

Josh

welcome to the area, i spend a bit of time around mt vernon since i fish the skagit quite a bit and most of my inlaws live between sedro and vernon.  I pretty much archery deer and elk but what i can tell you is if your limited on days and you wana chase the local blackietails the four day late modern Nov. 14-17 is your best shot.  If you wana chase mulies on the east side and dont wana be overrun with other hunters then make sure you go farther than winthrop or twisp, but it seems any public land in EA WA gets pretty hammered unless your willing to put some miles in.  Good luck

Hi Josh. Not sure of your schedule or plans. If wanting to travel for deer hunting like E. Washington. There is decent deer hunting near your home. Not really tree stand hunting around here. I can send you in the right direction in PM. I only hunt archery here and shot a doe back in Sept. But know where some bucks were hanging out. Rifle hunting almost anywhere be prepared to see more blaze orange than deer.

If you didnt hear all the deer in the Mt Vernon went south for the winter so you best check the latest migration schedule for them.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Sorry I was so slow to read them. I found a farmer on Hwy 9 thats willing to let me hunt his land and I was scouting it yesterday afternoon. I cannot beleive how vertical washington is.
