Update from 346 to 336
« on: October 07, 2013, 10:43:39 AM »

I've been camped in 346 and Hike over the trail into 336 to hunt. (brutal climb each morning, but I'm on an edge that no other hunter is near.)  I have yet to see the rut happen. I was up there for Archery season, now Muzzy, (multi-season tag)  nothing.
I'm finding most of the animals are still low, near the river bottoms.
When I cow call I can get a response from deep in the timber, but nothing has ventured my direction to check me out.
When I hunt the timber, I'm busting elk as I go. Typically I'm within 30yds and they break before I can spot them clearly. Tough dense woods.

I wonder if my hearing is poor, or I'm just doing it wrong.  Has anyone else been frustrated more this year than other years?
I have a tough time sitting in one spot for very long. I usually end up meeting other hunters and I help them get a great shot.
I may need a new area.
Couple more days...
Not as many campers up there either, thought there would be more.... did I miss a memo?

-Tired of spooking elk all day'
Hunting, Basketball, Cars.... not much more for me to talk about.

Me experience, though a bit limited, is that bulls prefer to come in from above so that they have the high ground. I have found it hard to call a bull up to me but find it much easier to call a bull down to me. I also think by this stage of the rut, the bigger bulls might be cowed up and not as likely to seek out a lone cow because they have plenty to tend to. If it were me, i would get down in amongst them and do some calling and wait for a while. If nothing, move a little bit and do it all over again. I also would try, if possible, to have someone else call for you because it is amazing how well they can pinpoint where the calls are coming from so if it is you that is calling, it makes them focus on your position.  :twocents:

No general M/L season in 346 this year, so that's probably why you're not seeing as many camps.  Do you have a Big Bull tag?  RT might have one tied to a tree for you if you do - but if you're on a general Multi-Season tag, you can't hunt that area.

Been up there alot lately! Correct on the no general season. Talked with several guys who had tags but wont get out of their trucks!!!! Road hunting is one thing but a tag of a lifetime is another!  Do the tag some justice!!!

Also found a guy hunting with muzzy this weekend , no permit! Just a general tag.. He really felt dumb after I explained he couldnt hunt there...  No way would I have turned him in....  Just helped him out

RT - when was the last time you were up there?  You still hearing bulls bugle?  I was up there last weekend to help drink whiskey in camp and it was *quiet* where they were hunting.  Saw a real nice bull hanging in a camp just up from the Sand Creek cutoff on Sunday morning, just down from the "Coach" road.

Was there sat and sunday. That bull was killed back down towards the wooden bridge.  Yes the bulls are still talking, very early and very late..

There has never been a general muzzleloader elk season in 346.

I have to agree with rt spring call and move during bow season there I called them in twice and both times they keep as much foliage between the call site and them that flanking one side I would strongly rec camend there pinpoint accuracy is amazing also , they are pretty much nocturnal up there at least after 11 days that what I'm guessing I did get a big 4x4 to come booming up the hill to me 15 yards but he was very good at not giving me a shot at all unbelievable I really believe if I flank one side after calling I would be posting my pics,( OH BOY SOMEBODY GIVE ME A SHOT THAT WILL LAST TILL NOVEMBER 27TH ) IT JUST WONT GO AWAY !!! :bash: :bash: :bash: :chuckle:THIS IS A LESSON I WILL NEVER FORGET,learned a lot that day, and I call it the best day of hunting in a long time, even if it leaves me drooling over all your pics guys.BEST OF LUCK !!

If your hiking in from 1905 i'd get back into 336 a lil further or head east towards peaches trail , if you have good legs you will be into elk all day.
