2 Bears Down!
« on: October 13, 2013, 09:27:59 PM »
Day 1

Well went in Friday morning with a buddy to try and find some berries below the snow.  We got an early start and climbed up over the ridge  through the snow and dropped down into another basin.  We were in the 1st meadow by daylight.  We hunted most of the morning without seeing a thing.  Almost all the open berry fields are covered by snow, so we dropped down and hunted the open timber that still had berries hanging on.  We were walking slowly through the timber with plans of heading out towards the truck.  I spotted a bear at less than 30 yards after coming around a tree.  I wasn't exactly  ready, rifle over the shoulder and no round in the chamber.  I chambered a round and amazingly the bear just continued to stand broadside looking at us.  Put one behind the shoulder with the 300 win and hunting buddy grazed his back with the 300 ultra mag as he dove into the bushes.  He didn't make it far, piled up about 5 yards into the bushes. Just under an hr later we were packing 5 miles uphill back to the truck. On the way out we spotted a larger boar working the hillside, he was about 340 yards but fed into the timber before we could get set up.  we tried to call him down but no luck

With those berries you should be able to pull another out of there. Good job adapting to the conditions!

Day 2

the next morning (opening day modern deer) we went in to find the other bear.  We couldn't find him in the morning so we continued to where i had shot my bear the day previous due to all the berries still there.  As we were coming out in the afternoon at about 3 Pm we spotted him again a little further up the valley across the draw from us.  He was about 300 yards out and no getting closer so we set up.  My buddy spotted him and took the first shot with the 300 ultra Mag.  He staggered and I followed up instantly with another shot and he was down.  1st shot spined him good 2nd shot hit the shoulder.  We made our way over and got him cleaned up.  I am amazed at how little these fat fall bears bleed.  Had that bear ran even with two hits from magnum calibers there would have been no blood trail.

Couple of nice looking Bears!

As far as bleeding, are you talking about as far as leaving a blood trail or how much they bled internally?

external.  1st bear blew out pretty good but his hide soaked it all up.  2nd bear we could see the shoulder layed open from the 300 win mag but no evidence of entrance or exit from the 300 ultra mag.  We found the bullet just under the hide perfectly mushroomed out, but basically the fat closes the wound and the hide soaks up all the blood

Exactly.  Bears have a fairly loose hide and lots of hair.  Once they start putting on fat and they get shot the skin rolls over the hole and seals it up.  What little blood comes out, the hair soaks up.

What some don't know is that if you hit a Bear in 1 lung and the skin rolls over the hole there is a good chance that bear will live.  The skin rolling over the hole keeps the lung from collapsing.

Nice bears. Still trying for mine this year. I am hoping. They are fun to hunt.

The hides should be starting to get good.  The coser to the end of season you shoot them the better there hides will be.
