Leakage
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:21:32 PM »
So over the past few months  my weimer in the middle of the night basiclly from what I can tell leaks pee. The vet thought maybe it was because he was not going to the bathroom before bed but that is not the case. He is very good at getting me up if he needs to go. Last night for instance he woke me up at 130 in the morning because he had to go. an hour later I had to get up for work only to find a wet spot . This happens when he sleeps from what I can tell. Anyone have any clue how to stop this and what could cause it?

ok do I'm going through this with my lab. It happened when she got fixed and she used to wet the bed constantly. I guess sometimes the act of getting them fixed damages the muscle that holds pee back, some kind of sphincter muscle.  I got some meds from the vet called Proin. It works really well. I guess there are some other ones out there but this works.

Same thing happened with my female GWP. Proin works great.

Has your Weim been fixed recently. I am not sure if what happens to a female would be the same for a male though.

Happened to my old Springer if we did not have her on Science Diet.  Any of the bacon flavored treats would cause it as well.  Watched her diet and no further problems.

Did not work with our current little Sandy pup.  Appears to be as others mentioned a problem with being fixed.  Though anything with pork or salt in it really opens up the gates.  Watching her diet and using the Proin does help.  She still has the occasional problem but it is so much better with the medication.

She has the problem all day long.  But night time does have it's challenges.  She is very good at letting us know when she needs to go out, but when she is having these type of accidents she rarely knows it's happening until she becomes wet.  Embarrasses the heck out of the poor little girl.  No matter how we try to make her feel better she does the walk of shame for an hour afterward.  We've become very diligent in taking her out before bed.  I also make sure she goes out at 2am as well.

Vet says they can do surgery to tighten up the sphincter muscle, but we've chosen to live with it as it did not get real bad until she hit the age where surgery is a risk.  Especially for springers we were told.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

My GWP was over two years old when I had her spayed. She had been through her second or third heat cycle. Unfortunately my family and I were out of town and had my parents took her to be spayed. They took her to the vet they normally use, a vet I am not to fond of. I should have waited and taken her somewhere else, but she was coming in heat again and it was a pain to take care of her especially with two male dogs in the house, so my parents had it done.

Wow...this is really interesting as it's the first posting I've come across in my search for a solution.  My WPG leaks as well.  He's a year old and has had the issue from day one (wasn't neutered until very recently).  It typically happens evenings and night time.  From what I can tell he'll be sleeping, totally relaxed and "lazy" to get up.  Neutering had no effect - positive or negative.  Diet has not led to changes either and yes, has been tested several times for UTI.

About the only effective tactic I've had work is taking his water away early in the evening - around 8p because his last chance out is 10p - helps the most.  In my case my hope is that it's just a pup thing and that he will grow out of.
