Dads first deer
« on: November 23, 2013, 10:00:42 AM »
Well I finally got my dad out hunting this year.  At 52 years old he got his first deer.  We were hunting out of the Cle Elum area and had been hitting it pretty hard the first few days.  After putting many miles on our boots we only had spotted a few does.  On this particular day we woke to daylight shining in the camper windows.  Tired from the previous days of hiking, my dad, me, and my father in law decided to spend some time in the Toyota tree stand scouting some new area.  The last place I want to be during hunting season is in the truck but knowing very well that if I didn't go along that the old men would surely see a legal buck.  We reached our hunting area at around 8am and slowly began to drive up the dirt road, cracking jokes about the hunters that were getting an even later start than us as they sat in camp lacing up their hunting boots as we passed by in the mobile tree stand.  A few minutes later we spot some deer near the road, a couple does and some spikes.  Not seeing a legal buck we continued up the road.  A few minutes later I spot a couple deer about 70 yards off the road and the blocky body of one is a dead giveaway that it's a buck.  (I couldn't see the deer's head at this point.)  I get out of the truck and load my gun, stepping off the road to try and get a better view of the deer.  The buck starts moving up the hill, paralleling the road and I don't have a shot.  My father in law pulls the truck up the road a little farther and my dad gets out and loads his gun.  The buck runs right into an opening in the trees and stops.  As my dad put the cross hairs of his scope on the buck, my father in law made the call, "legal, shoot him" and that's all it took.  My dad made a perfect 70 yard shot and dropped him in his tracks.  After taking pictures my dad started to gut the deer.  With his adrenaline still pumping he was trying to go too fast and cut his finger with his knife.  So i finished gutting his deer for him and proceeded to give him a hard time about cutting himself so he wouldn't have to gut his deer and get his hands dirty.  Overall it was a great week of hunting and great spending time with my dad and father in law.  I really enjoy reading everyone's stories here on the website and have learned a lot from all of you so thank you.

If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?
