Deer Hide -tanning
« on: October 16, 2013, 08:50:30 PM »
So I got a deer this Saturday and planned on trying to tan it myself (never tried it before) as my wife would like to use the hide for a project. Started to flesh it tonight. Didn't go real well as apparently I don't have the tools, time or skill to do this.

Any recommendations for the Everett area to get this done? Called quil ceda and they said there are no tanneries around here. Is that true?

If there is a place what is the cost to do?

Or is it no good now (been kept near freezing but not frozen ).

Do I put it in the freezer until I figure it out?

Thanks all for the input.

I would fold it up and put it in the freezer.

Yes, there are a couple of small Tanneries in Washington.  One I will not recommend on this site. The other is over in NE Washington.  Most only do work for taxidermists.  You will still have to flesh the hide and salt it.  Then dry it hard before taking it to the tannery.  They store the hides until it is time for that hide to be worked on.  The hide needs to be salted and dried so it will store.

Call your local taxidermist.  I was at the taxidermist today and saw two hides come in.  I saw the process, as Michelle stated, they are fleshed and salted, and then dried hard to be shipped to a tannery.  Not sure of cost, but I am gonna do my next one, I think it would be cool on a wall!

I charge $125 for a Deer to flesh the hide, salt it, dry hard and ship to the tannery and have it tanned.  Once it comes back I call you to pick it up.  A 50% deposit when you drop it off and the remaining 50% when you pick it up.

Does that cost include the tannery, or is that a separate cost?

That includes the Tannery.

You drop off a Raw or Frozen Deer hide of any size and when you get it back it will be tanned.  It's $125 + 7.9% sales tax.  Total is $134.88.

Rub in some non iodized salt and drape it over a pole hair side down a couple days to remove weight. Send it to "Uber Glove" in Owatonna, MN.  $46 for hair off and choice of color. I have had a dozen done - nice work.
