Public Ground Deschutes (666)
« on: October 14, 2013, 09:07:13 AM »
I have an antlerless second deer tag for the 666, any info on public access?  I know of a couple little pockets and I have a little private ground to hunt, but any info on some other spots would be appreciated.  If someone has some problem deer terrorizing their gardens, I would be more than happy to come help  :).  I have a bow that could be used in place of firearms if need be.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Saw a guy Sunday morning walking the paved two lane roads over by Reeder road.... Rifle, vest, paved road. Go figure....  We see deer in the area often, but I would not be inclined to dump a doe in someones front yard...

Good luck!

I don't know who owns the land but I always see deer in the small patch of woods off 507 between mcntosh lake and the walking trail where people park and walk down to the lake to fish.  If legal to hunt there probably best with a bow.

I'm surprised they were out of their trucks lol.  A good friend of mine has permission to hunt a couple of those properties and sees a lot of clowns road hunting that area.

Capital Forest?  There are plenty of deer there.

Have you tried the land at the end of Vantine Rd, in Tenino?  I use to always see deer in there.

I just checked the county assessors page and it looks like Port Blakely bought it back, so hopefully it is open.  It was owned by a private company trying to build a gated community for a while so I have not been out there for a few years.  I kind of worry about leaving my truck out there though, there are some shady characters out that way.

Capital Forest is not part of GMU 666, it is in GMU 663, Capital Peak.

All that and heading over to McIntosh used to be Weyerhaueser. It was a decent area until they sold it. It was gated/divided up. Part by Vantine was run by a private timber company last time I checked and was open for access. Pretty overgrown. All I saw in there was local guys on quads though. I'd knock on some doors for private access; just not much in the way of public, as I'm sure you know.

Your "best" bet would have been Ft. Lewis land off of Rainier road but it is too late to take the class for an entry pass.  The kid and I are doing that next year.  There is also some land locked state land but you need to find out which belongs to the state and which belongs to the school district.  School district is a no weapons zone even though it is raw land.  You might knock on some doors in the Stedman/Spurgeon Creek areas.
