Yakima Res

Anyone hit it this year?  I have been thinking about headed over and buying the permit but I've never really tried that area before.  Any tips?  I've heard some people talk it up quite a bit for chukar and pheasant but I've heard others say it sucks and is dried up.

Last time i was out there i found an elk with the head cut off and half a deer with the head missing and we shot no roo's....

Yeah I see the headless animals up in Hancock WR as well....

Just lookin for a nice place to take the pup ;-)  The westside pheasant has been a great training program but I do want to get him into wild birds.

There is a lot of feel free to hunt land here but it gets pounded by hunters early. The bird wise up quick and jump 100 yards out in front of you when they hear the slightest peep. There are a some birds yes, but you will need to find them early in the day in thick cover or find small thick patches that no one hunts. Or... Have an army of people to push fields and have posters at the end of the field. Like anything else, the more pressure there is the harder it is to kill the roosters. Good luck

It's pretty lame.. It gets pounded on the feel free to hunt areas. I went out there last weekend and it sucked. I would look at Grant County wildlife areas first. That's #1 in the state for pheasants. Look it up on the WA Fish and Wildlife website under hunting access.

Last year it was some of the best pheasant in the state.  No idea yet on this year.

  no kidding. The last couple years have been really good. I am hunting feel free to hunt down there. I know a couple of the landowners with ffth and they said they've been seeing good numbers.

How good is really good in Washington anymore?

Good if you know where to go, work at it and have a good Dog or dogs. There have been years, in the past 8  :IBCOOL:or so, I have shot limits of chukar and quail down there and there have been years where you see no chukar and lots of quail.

I have some great spots on the res where I never see any hunters, kinda nice!

I've had ok days in there too.... I don't hunt chucker on the Res, but I have gotten a lot of quail a stray rooster here and there. I actually kicked up a covey of Huns down low one time.
To me the Res is good for quail and a nice bonus if you get a rooster. Those Yakima roosters are SMART... they have to be or they would be extinct!

My brother-in-law hunts the Yak rez every year (he has his spots). He said that this year was the worst that he has seen. Usually they limit out both days. This year he only got two for the whole weekend.

I went down monday morning and saw tons of roosters.. hitting them was another story didnt see another hunter anwhere. Headed back out in the morning.

I was there Sat, Sun, and Mon.  I thought it was pretty slow...and, as always, lots of pressure.  I've been hunting there for 25 years now and it's nothing like it used to be.  There seems to be less feel free to hunt areas every year and not nearly as many birds.  Still fun for me to hunt there though..

Does the res open up for pheasants early or something? According to the regs pheasant doesn't open til the 19th.
