Where to hunt for cougars close?
« on: October 30, 2008, 06:45:44 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am new to the area, just pcs'd to Fort Lewis.  I seem to have pretty much missed deer season so i figured i might try for a cougar.  The problem is, i have no idea where i could find them.  I live just south of Yelm in Rainier.  If anyone has any advise of anywhere fairly close that i could go i would be eternally grateful.

Thanks,

Dan

Thank you for your service and welcome to western Washington.
I have never taken a cougar yet, I think most hunters shoot a cat as an incidental animal while chasing deer or elk, if you learn to call as I have read you can do I would suggest you have a partner with you just in case the cat or bear get too close. Good luck.

PS. You are close to the Skookumchuck and Vail Tree Farm Area where deer and elk roam so I am sure cougars are around.

Welcome danrabe.

callonetta pretty much summed it up.
I would also suggest some coyote hunting on or near base and if you can get everything ready you still have 4 days of late buck. FL has some great deer hunting.

:)I know a couple guys on the Fort, they tell me south on the base, towards the Tank crossing and mock city that several guys report seeing a cougar.
Welcome to Washington and Thank You!!!

Wait until the snow starts to fall in the MT. Then head up to see if you can cut some tracks in the fresh snow. If you would like PM me I live in Eatonville I would be more than happy to take a soldier out for some cat hunting. I am looking for a cat myself. O by the way there is a rifle deer season coming up this weekend. Just FYI.
