Blacktails and what?
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:20:24 PM »
Hey guys......here one for you.

What works well with blacktails as far as bait goes? I've tried salt blocks...all kinds....deer feeds.....buck jam.....etc...but it sems like they could care less. I have trail pictures of them walking right by it.....through it....and around .......but not one photo of a blacktail enjoying or wanting it. I'm beginning to think mountian deer aren't attracked to baits like white tails are.

The first pic is an example......a young doe standing in the middle of it.......but never touched it. In the 2nd pic....this young buck walked right past it in favor of some greens.

Thoughts?   :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

It probably has too much of your scent on it.  If you have any odd odors on you when you put out your stuff it can keep them from eating it.

Maybe there is coyote piss all over it like Cohoho's block?

I second the human scent factor.

Never tried it, but I think your salt block should work.

They sure do like salt in my neck of the woods...These are just a few random pics, I've got at least 300 pics of blacktails this summer.  I use salt with trace minerals that I pick up at the feed store, I haven't had much luck with the sporting goods variety of deer attractants.

Apple's and Cob (rolled oats, it's horse feed) Deer seem to like salt more when they come out of winter. Most people with apple tree's will love to have someone clean them off the ground for them. As far as cheating? Apple and grain fed deer are the best to eat.

Its more to see what pottential and what kind of bucks you have in your area, its not like out east were you just sit over bait all day and wait till one comes out.

I bait exclusively with fallen apples, browner the better. I live in an area where it is really thick not unlike a lot of western washington. Baiting brings out deer that you would not otherwise see, I have had 12 different deer on 1 pile in a 40 acre piece I hunt, I may see 1 or 2 of them throughout the year otherwise. I archery hunt and have no problem with baiting it's a gtreat way to see lot's of deer and also a great way to harvest quality animals. Baiting is accepted all over the u.s. not just here and in texas. Who wouldn't want to sit on a stand and bea able to see so many critters at such a close range.

When we were scouting near Eatonville, I pulled out a bag of Deer Co Cain mix and spread it all around a small meadow under a tree. We came back the next day and it was all licked up, ground was trampled and there was deer prints, droppings and scrapes all around where I had put it. Going to bring some with me for late buck and try it again...found it at Joe's Outdoors....
