Saw my first bear
« on: October 19, 2013, 06:40:05 PM »
So out of all the time I've spent in the woods I finally saw my first bear. While I can't actually judge its size with no experience I can say it was a shooter. I would of taken a shot if I wasn't too busy making rookie mistakes and concentrating on getting to a spot to sit and not looking at the clear cut I was hunting.  :bash:

Now my question is are the odds good this sucker will be heading back through tomorrow and if so would it be around the same time?

Very difficult to say. Some bears yes, others no. What was he doing there? This time of year a bear can eat for 20 to 22 hours a day. If there is food and plenty of it, then he may be back or another one. If food is scarce, then he might have been passing through on the lookout for food.

Basic way to judge size in a bear is by the ears and the legs. If he looks like he has long legs and radar dishes for ears, then he is most likely a smaller bear. If the ears look small and down on the side of the head as well as short stumpy legs, then "brace, breath, and squeeze"!

I only got about a 30 second look at him but it was for sure a shooter. The clear cut is very large with lots of hills. The whole area has stumps that have been recently torn up.

I had hesitated for one second and by the time I got my rifle on him he took two steps and disappeared into the timber.  :'( It's been eating at me all day.

One thing for sure, you wont see him from home! Get back out there! I'm headed out myself. Good luck!

Will do!  I'll be out again bright and early. Hopefully have a second chance at him or maybe a deer. Either way I'd be a happy hunter.

I encountered a bear myself a couple of weeks ago while deer hunting with my muzzleloader. Fortunately for him, he saw me first and took off. I'm not sure who was more surprised, me or him!  :yike:

Hopefully I'll encounter him again when late muzzleloader season opens up.
