The cat probably didn't go too far, maybe 150 yds...was probably watching you.

Lion also climb up tree and wait.    I would look around trees!  Always look up also go back same spot and set fox caller. Call them in!  You will get one for sure!   Don't miss your chance!

Dang, I was thinking that when you said you left it over night.  I would have tried finding it in the dark!  Just hate the thought of not knowing.  Wouldn't be able to sleep a wink!  But nice work tracking it.  Heck, may have come face to face with the cat in the dark, so maybe that was best...  But still - i'd have to go look for it, dark or not.

Woulda coulda shoulda... I'm sure you probably did the right thing.  Probably 99.9% of the time, it would have ended up fine.  I'd be more worried about other 2 legged 'hunters' out there steeling it...  So that would depend on the area and how many others were around.
