My First Elk
« on: October 20, 2013, 06:31:52 PM »
I've only been hunting for elk for 4 years now. I live in rural North Bend and drew a special hunt cow tag in GMU4601. For 2 weeks prior to the season opener we've been observing a 6x6 bull and 20+cows hanging out in my area. So on the Fri. night before the opening everybody is settling down in my yard for the night. The expectation of an elk hanging in my garage early Sat. morning was very high. Out in my blind by 6 waiting anxiously for the first light. When it's light enough to see....no elk in sight.  Sipping on a cup of coffee.....7:05 am....I hear the shot ...my neighbor about a 1/4 mile away takes down the 6x6. So I sit for the next 3 days not seeing a single elk. On Tues. afternoon a spike with 7 cows show up 90 plus yds. out. I wait til dark and they never did give me a good opportunity to take a shot. Up early on Wed. I sat all day until 2:30 when the spike showed up again by himself. He grazed 30-40 yards in front of me for 45 min. and wandered off into the woods again. Is this it? All I'm going to see today? At 4pm 2 cows walk out followed by the spike and a 3x3.....so as I'm getting my gun into position, out come 2 more cows with another spike. Now there's elk all over the place. 2 more cows come charging out of the woods with the 4x4 strutting out right behind them. Now my heart is pounding thru my chest!  He walks out and stops... 40 yds.  broadside. I squeeze the trigger and when the smoke clears... there he his. DOWN! :yike: :yike: .  WOW I dropped my first elk.....Amazing... Had some buddies help me out and now it's time for my GF to fill her tag in Nov.

My blind is built under a large hemlock tree with a old growth cedar stump as cover. It about 25 yds. from my house and opens up to a 10 acre field.

25 yards from the house?  A cup of coffee?
Heck, you could set up the whole coffee maker with an extension cord.
I'm jealous.   :chuckle:

Congrats on your success and a very nice bull.  Welcome too!  :)
