Locked gate on Sultan Basin Rd (just past the nudist camp)
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:25:14 AM »
The gate was open on Saturday, but I showed up this morning and it was locked.  Anybody know the story?  Only open on weekends?

Is this the one on the right....long gravel road leading in with a shooting pit just at the Y on the left?

I'm with Jason....I've only seen gates open during active logging or equipment moving....as far as I know all gates are for non motorized use...I wouldn't be driving past them without some form of written permission and your own key.

Yup, dont drive past it. Workers only, unless you have a spring bear permit...

A locked gate like this on DNR land, left open usually means log or gravel trucks are running/in out. I'm pretty sure they're logging up there (I think you're talking about the Marsh Creek mainline). Time is money for these guys and they're not going to mess around opening/closing a gate when they're working.  That's why you leave it open if you find it that way.

The sign that says "no-motor vehicle access" still applies, you risk getting a ticket; or worse getting locked in.

Thanks guys, that's about what I figured.  If it's worth shooting then I guess it's worth an 8-mile walk.

Wouldn't waste your time out there anyway nothing to see.

I don't know if this is genuine or trying to lead me off the scent, but I did almost hit a good-sized buck on the way back into town this morning.

I spotted this monster buck in that area last spring.   He's probably a solid spike by now:
