Hunting pressured blacktails
« on: October 21, 2013, 02:41:05 PM »
Are you all changing your strategies now that the deer have been pressured? Opening day I saw 20 plus deer and now I am only seeing a few. Is checking the clear cuts at first light a waste of time now? I'm not sure how to hunt these tree farms. I'm trying to get away from people but the brush is too thick to walk and shoot in. Is walking old closed roads worth while? Just trying to get a few pointers, what do you think?

I have all the same questions, and no answers. I'm about to give up on blacktails- forever!

They are in night mode.
I have seen none in my fields during the day the past few weeks, only at dark.
I am making a stand in the evenings and early mornings, that's it.

Gotta be out midday, not mornings and evenings when the moon is big and full like it has been.  Sleep in, hunt 10am-3pm, and start drinking early

I saw some today on my way home, 2:00 in the afternoon, sometimes they like to move while the woods are empty also.
They seem to figure out that first light and last light are danger times, and move when most hunters are back at camp, home, vehicle....
Too bad the weather seems calm until after season, a good storm could get them moving...
I have heard that 40% of the harvest actually occurs during late season, if I was a MF hunter I would really only be hunting the opener, the last week of October, and late season.  :twocents:

Hunt all day. Don't get discouraged as they are there. The rut should be starting and your chances of getting a bruiser are going up. I've shot many nice bucks between 10:00 and 11:00am. Find some nice rub activity and park your rearend in a tree or ground stand. You might go days without seeing anything and then, bang, your tag is filled. Sit as often as you can, whether it is glassing a clearcut edge, watching a road crossing, or back in the trees or swamp. I shoot pretty much all my blacktails in thicker brush sitting and waiting. Good Luck!

Go where the deer aren't pressured! If you look hard enough you'll find tons of little hunterless honey holes, trust me.

I have been seeing 10-15 deer a day, in vail of all places.  My buddy killed one off a does butt last night, they are starting to move a lot more.  The majority of deer I have been seeing are from 3pm to dark.

Go where you've seen them, and move slowly. Like 100 feet an hour slowly. It's practically stand hunting. They are there, but you have to see them before they see youl.
