Garmin GPS Collar

OK I have a question for the guys on the wetside, If you run your dog with a GPS collar, how well does it pick up a signal in the thick stuff, I am ready to get a dog but need to upgrade a few things and at the top of my list is my a new e collar......

My garmin 320 with a DC40 collar will track my dog 400+ yards out in heavy forest.

If your just starting out i'd get the dc50 collars, think it runs off the astro 320. Heard lots of good things about them and extended range. Longest i've been able to receive a signal from system is 900 yards, lost signal plenty at 300yrds just depends.

Maybe I got a dud, but I prefer my DC40 with an aftermarket antennae over the DC50.

I guess Im old skool,got the 30 collar on the astro 22o and have never had the question mark show up.But it was all in the lowland alder scrubs.I've had the questionmark show up on the eastside palouse.

How far does your dog range out? If you're talking about 50-200 yards, no big deal. More than that and you might, or might not, run into issues.

It really depends. The terrain, trees, and even clouds can have an impact on how well the signal comes through.

I would definitely use long range antennas.

I still use a beeper and sometimes a bell depending on my mood. The constant noise let's me know where the dog is and when they are on point faster and gives some redundancy to my setup.

That said, I ran one of my dogs on a release site last weekend with just the Astro and it was one of the more pleasurable hunts I've had. Then again, the dog was handling quite well...which leads me to another point. The Garmin Astro is no substitute for training. Teach your dog to handle in the woods and you'll seldom need to look at the Astro.

I used to lose signal with my DC-30 fairly often.  My DC-40 is much better.  I've seen it hold out to 1000 yards with the standard antenna in the Prairies.  I've also seen the long range antenna that you strap to the top of your car pickup a dog at 5 miles.  That was actually kind of funny since the collar was left back at camp in the horse trailer.  Next thing you know were are tracking the collar running at 5 miles, then it went on point..
