Old or young???
« on: November 01, 2008, 02:35:27 PM »
I was going through some old pictures and I was trying to decide if this buck from last year was a youngster or an older buck. I never did look at his teeth but he had a massive body and nice roman nose. He doesn't have any mass like an older buck should. I'm usaully pretty good at judging age but this one has me stumped. He's a bench buck by the way.

What do you think?

and yes, we knew exactly how long his eyeguards were before I shot him.

He looks pretty young to me.. Usually when they reach a few years they start to turn grey in the forehead... But thats just me talking... I could be wrong.. Still he's a nice looking buck..

I vote old too, mainly from the body and head size.

Was the meat tuff?  He's a mature deer, but doesn't look any older than four years.

I think he's an old buck.  They're not all fighters, esp. if they have poor genetics, or a congenital defect or injury.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

As many bucks as I have mounted, Ive seen just as many old beat up bucks as young beat up bucks with scared faces and ripped tore up ears.. Teeth is were you'll see age. Looks like a mature buck to me, old? Couldnt tell ya without looking in his mouth. You dont happen to have that cape in the freezer do ya? I need a nice bench buck cape fo a nice bench buck my dads uncle killed in the 50's. Thats a beatiful cape.

I vote young.  Every "older" muley ive seen is a little gray on his forehead.  Miss colors are to "colorful" to be a old buck in my opinion, but what do i know...  :P

Not young, not old...just right....DEAD!

I would have to say mature but not old. Four or five years old.

I would put him about 4 years, he obviously doesn't have the 4 point genome and should have been taken out of the pool. Well done, great looking super forkie, love the brow tines too!!!
