Just curious where i could pick some pigeons up? I live in Skagit county and would love to get out and do some training with my GWH. She is seven months old and i would like to get her excited about birds. Are there any pointers you guys could give me about training my beautiful girl? im really green on this so any pointers would help ( im currently reading thru a bunch of posts and there is a lot of great stuff) About her: she is 7 months old and full of energy, she has a great nose and ive noticed on our runs (just around town) that she shows interest in any bird that flys up in our path. She does need to learn some better manners but that is all on me. Im still working with her. I wouldnt be opposed to taking her to a professional but i do not know where to start looking and i would prefer not to have to cross the mountain to do this. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Have you ever considered starting your pup with a Pro? Do some one on one sessions at a daily rate is pretty reasonable. Especially, considering you'll have your pup for many hunting seasons. There are a few in your area.

It isn't any big deal. You show up, usually the first visit is free with almost every trainer I know. They'll do a bit of a workout to evaluate you and your dog. Usually, they'll get a bird out and do a few things. This is when you talk about their fees, what they charge, what are your options. Almost all that I know will do a single workout at a daily rate+birds you use. This is a great way to get started because the trainer will teach you what to work on and give you some homework. Be sure to ask for homework! Come back a week later and see how things progress. I've seen quite a few people make Master Hunters doing that routine. One lady who started that way about a year ago just won a field trial with her GSP! (a lot of progress was made and eventually placed the dog with the trainer for a few months full time before the win)

Would you mind giving me some info on the local trainers? Also do you think I should get her basic manners more fine tuned or go and get some assistance in this department alsi?

Wildweeds has a guy he recommends for pointers up there- he'll probably chime in. Conway Kennels will do light gun dog work on pointers. Basic Obedience is just the basic-

Jim's a real good guy,knows his stuff and prefers to train the trainer.He's got lots of guys that come up and do exactly what your wanting to do.You get the satisfaction of doing it yourself under the guidance of a mentor that knows what NOT to do.
