Coweeman?
« on: December 07, 2014, 01:06:59 AM »
Anyone having luck or hearing of any luck in the coweeman? Been up there a bunch, seeing nothing but old sign until today. Finally saw 5 cows within 10 yds (that all appeared to be walking normal thankfully) and one bull in the thick stuff that I never could get close to. Haven't heard much news so thought I'd ask. This was up the Kalama River area in the non permit spots.

That unit is dead, thanks to the gazillion cow permits over the last 4 seasons, hoof rot, and wolves.

Never seen anything as dead as the Coweeman this year during modern season. Totally different than just a couple years ago- heck even last year was way better. Toutle too.

In the 5 days I hunted hard i found cougar tracks, bobcat and coyote tracks, a few large piles of still steaming bear poop, and 5 branch antlered bucks. But not a single piece of fresh elk sign, but the predatory leavings may have had something to do with it :twocents:

Or...not so distant relatives.  :chuckle:

I'm not saying that wolves won't end up in the Coweeman at some point, but two in two days this year?  Dylan, you need to work on your canid ID skills.

 :yeah:

I was just thinking that if a lone wolf were to somehow take a wrong turn and make it the several hundred miles across the state and there was some damn good photographic evidence, I would be like damn, that things a long ways from home. But 2 different wolves in two days, in that area, you'd have a better chance of drawing a blues bull tag every year.  :chuckle:

I wouldn't be surprised.... I was hearing rumors a few years ago about fish and wildlife releasing a few near mt st Helens... but no proof.... but then again big brother don't have to tell us everything.

I'm sure the lack of elk has to do with the massive amount of cow tags they issued for 3 years in January, 2011-2013.  Same thing in Winston.   Management bs.  I watched the step decline.

Piss poor management. We waived the white flag and headed East.
