Bones Alta Hunt
« on: November 01, 2008, 07:18:22 PM »
It was pretty lean today.  I was hoping to glass over 20 bucks a day LOL.  Didn't even really get to try out my new glass, withthe fog so thick.  The good thing about today was if you could see a deer, it was already within bow range.  The highlite of the day happened fairly quickly at 9 this morning.  I spotted a does ears looking at me at about 20 yards.  She continued passed me with two more does.  I watched them without moving.  THe fog was just starting to come in.  I figured I should wait 10 minutes and see if there were any bucks in tow.  I waited then took about 5 steps.   I heard a crunch and I froze.  A buck came up ove the rise through the moutnain laurel at about 20 feet.  He walked right by me, picked up the does tracks and continued on.  He was a 3x1 .   I tried to slip my camera out, but by the time I let him pass, he was on his way and disappeared into the fog.  The fog came in real thick at this point.  I was contempleating what to do when I heard another deer coming.  It was within 20 feet and I couldn't see him.  I heard him grunt, so know it was a buck.  He disappeared right after the others.  I thought to myself holy moly maybe I out to sit here for a few minutes.   The fog lifted and I spotted another doe.  Then it was pea soup again.  After that is was pretty much solid all day with rain.  ALl good, I pray its snow up high.  Found more sign than I thought I might, but still not many deer.  Now I am trying to figure out whether to hunt the local bucks and hope a big one escaped, pack into the moutnains and go after them, or hunt the middle country and hope that some have migrated in even though there hasn't been much weather.  Rain or snow, I hope the fog is gone tomorrow.  I like hunting in patchy fog, probably my fave, but not this solid crap.
3 bucks ID, one not...only 9 doe

Perfect settings for those shots bone.  Those are nice and sharp too.  Keep with iso 400, f2.8, aperture priority and you are good to go 90% of the time.  Good stuff.

Yep, pretty bad to have hi within 20 feet and not be able to see him.  By the way, that really gets on your nerve when you have no clue where you are going and which end is up.  THANK god I had the compass in the pack.

Thanks Ray.

Thanks POPE.

Thanks Slider.  All three shots were freehand, no mono and not in the best of light.  I was super impressed with how sharp that eagle came out and my flight photo.  I haven't been able to get very good ones.

Doug I say stick it out for a while before moving up too high. Those big boys have got to be moving down reguarless of the snow. With the lack of snow you should be able to get to some of those honey holes you know up there. Even though you will be hunting with the bow the first part of the season those big boys will absolutely be down there by the end. You know by then they will congregate in those canyons like they did for me. Give them hell!!

The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.
