204 quality any buck
« on: October 24, 2013, 08:04:40 PM »
My dad and I are going to accompany his good friend who is in his 70's that drew the late 204 quality any buck. He lives in Omak. We have a cabin in 204 and have our own little areas we know hold some good white tails. I know this unit is BIG and also holds some nice mule deer. Is this tag worth more spent on a Muley? He's never killed a big buck so we want to do our best to help him with this tag. Thoughs?

A big whitetail or a big Muley - both are going to be big no matter how you look at it if they are both mature deer.  Just my  :twocents:

That's a tag I'll probably put in for forever and never get drawn.... There are some good bucks of both species in that unit..Personally I would focus on a muley... But I also wouldnt pass on a mature wtail either. Good luck

Think it would come down to personal preference... Can't go wrong with a mature buck in either species. Having a couple decent muleys on the wall I wouldn't pass on a good whitey.  :twocents: Good huntin' to you and have fun!

Whenhe sees the buck he wants he will know it. I'd work high and low and just look for the buck of a lifetime, regardless species.  :twocents:

Yeah he gets around pretty good for his age. It's his reaction time that is the only concern. We've even talked about putting him in a stand and trying that approach for a few days. Either way it will be fun, I will get to prepare for my late archery and tag along for a hunt at the same time. This will most likely be his first and last quality tag. Thanks for the input so far.

I have seen some nice whitetails in there but I'll never forget the mule deer buck I saw in 204 one morning.  About 90 yards away in the fog, high, wide, handsome, and heavy...let me see if I can dig up a picture.  He was probably just high 160s maybe 170s but I know there are some serious bruisers up there.

I'd personally go for a big mule deer in that unit.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Only saw 3 whitetail bucks out in 204 this past archery season, but I did see like 9 mule deer bucks. 4 of the 9 would studly, horns outside their ears.

I would take  big mule buck over a big whitetail any day

Personaly i wold be targeting a muley with this tag, but im not sure that i would pass a really nice whitey if i saw one.
I know someone who had a late whitetail tag for this unit last year and saw a masher mulie during his hunt...
I have seen some nice mulies archery hunting the late hunt (whitetails only)...

You guys seeing most the Muleys in the northern part of the unit? We have Muleys right around our cabin, never seen a real good one however a thirty minute drive away were in good whitetail country. Though it's thick.

Seen some good muleys in there during muzzle the last couple years just haven't been able to connect.... Would love to go over there for the rut you'll have a blast... Missed a real big buck near Bonaparte lk a few years back he would be worthy of that tag. Also my kid was squeezing away on his front stuffer on a huge buck but the safety was on. I was waiting for the rifle to go off and the buck turned and jumped away to not n seem again.... I am jealous good luck

We finally made it out today. Looked around in some whitetail country. Had a good 4pt at 100 yards chasing a doe. Thinking tomorrow we are going to lurk around tunk mt. In some mule deer country and hopefully turn up a big dumb one.

Well I got home last night. My dads buddy never filled his tag. At 73 years old he was pretty limited physically and not the greatest eyes lol. He had a good time. Opportunities at a few bucks and a great opportunity at a legit 175"+ Muley that just didn't pan out.  He was pretty tired as he said he most likely wasn't going to get back out today for one last effort. Still it was fun to get out for a few days. Brought my 7 yo boy along who had a blast looking for deer and hiking around.
