Blacktails up high or down low?
« on: October 25, 2013, 11:36:52 AM »
So I've been up high and the deer activity seems very low this year. I'm thinking the long dry summer has dried everything out up in the meadows and the deer are hanging out lower in the trees. Anyone else seeing this? Not much time left so I'm torn between heading up high or low this weekend.

A blacktails range is typically not more than a mile. There is going to be exceptions to every rule

The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

:yeah: Absolutely, they are were they are and stay there. There is not many BT that migrate, that I am aware of. If the area is larger, it wont be much more than 1.5-2 square mile range.

The alpine bucks have to migrate eventually and it seems like the mule deer migrated early this year  :twocents:

Just got back from a morning hunt in the high country. Hiked a couple hours in the dark, glassed for 3 hrs and saw nothing but goats. Never even saw a fresh track. When I left the house this morn it was 39 degrees. Where I parked it was 45 and just got warmer as I hiked in. Dry, dusty and noisy. I'm sure they've moved into the heavy timber on the northern slopes. Since the rut is usually about a week later up there I'll be focusing on the lowlands and the rut. I'm sure we hunt some of the same ground.
