Snow Goose Quality Hunt
« on: November 16, 2008, 06:08:29 PM »
Has anyone had any luck with the snow geese? There doesn't seem to be very many juvies.

We had a few come in, but they were too high.

After three days, we ended up with a "quality hunt shut-out"  :bash:.

A real bummer after you haul 400+ rags and 10 doz. shells.

They have not moved in in big numbers yet. Give it a few more weeks.

I am on day 3 of the 5 days.  There are a crapload of geese down.  However, the weather has completely sucked.  No wind and no clouds. They are sitting there quite content on the preserve which is loaded with green feed.  Fog on Mon AM, but the geese weren't really moving off the bay until around 10.  Here are some pics taken this week.  But, nothing in the freezer yet.
Introduce someone new to hunting this year.

From what I see the best thing to do is to turn over three decoys on their backs and hope the birds fly through your fields and don't see you.  I have gotten far more birds on the quality hunt fields doing this than actually using a bunch of decoys.  I know it isn't what Doug wants us to do, but it works and I get over 100 Snows a year. I don't waist a lot of shells, but just wait it out until I can get a shot with good odds.  The birds so far have avoided people with decoys.  Maybe when they get stressed out they might come in to the decoys a little better.

150+ snow geese flew over my dorm today at 6pm.  I heard them and looked out my window and saw a huge white flock of geese.  They landed in a field about a mile or 2 from the WSU campus.  I just watched 3 other flocks of 150+ come swirling down into the same area.  As I'm typing this 2 more flocks have landed in this field!  They are piling into it!

I agree with Snowgoose..... We NEVER used dekes !!  They would never enter a field that had them no matter if they had been feeding there the night before.
I do not know why FG has made a requirement to use dekes.
But I suppose if you turn em over, your still useing them... Great idea !

On a pos note, I saw 4 flocks fly over the TRI last saturday...... They were cruzing so not sure where the hell they were headed.
Had 3 large flocks semi high in Goldendale this morning...

The weather is getting better...... I mean worse....LOL.
