Craziest Grouse Hunt Ever!
« on: October 25, 2013, 07:03:21 PM »
This isn't RTSpring worthy, not really even close but it was an enormous surprise and I will never forget it  :yike:

I had the day off so I decided to grab my nine-month old terrier/spaniel (avatar) and do a grouse hunt since the MF deer season is over and elk doesn't start until tomorrow.

The fog was thick and the grouse were too.  We got into them in a hurry and even though I only had my .22 Ruger pistol, I was able to knock a couple down within a half hour.

Delia is getting much better and her mouth is soft enough now that I don't have to worry about her destroying all my birds   :chuckle:

We got down to a creek bottom and she takes off running uphill like she's been turpentined   :o  "hey! get back here!" I yelled after her to no avail.

The next thing I hear is her howling like she's possessed and then yelping and squealing  :yike:  Needless to say, I took off up the hill like the D3 track star that I am   :chuckle:

I clear the top of the hill to see her tangled up with a raccoon, growling and snapping.  That thing had her pinned down and I knew she couldn't live long beneath a raccoon bigger than her.  I ran over yelling and grabbed that thing and threw it off her.  When it hit the ground and ran off, she was right on its tail howling just like the black and tan coonhound that she has trained with

She ran that coon up a tree and gave a measly "tree" like only a 50% cocker spaniel could  that sucker was only about 20' up the tree and I walked over and plugged him.

Hope you enjoyed the story.  I am so proud of her (despite the oddity and fact that I was grouse hunting) and so glad she didn't get hurt beyond a few scratches.

Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

You gonna eat that coon?

I like coon meat, tastes like Chinese sweet and sour spare ribs a bit

Yeah she is a little maniac and is going to get herself hurt one of these days (worse than a compound fractured leg or raccoon fight  :chuckle:)

Nah, I've eaten them before but not this time.  The only ones I ate that I enjoyed were young ones.  I know they're reasonably palatable but I just didn't feel like messing with a greasy coon carcass when I've got 2 deer and a whole bunch of grouse and bear meat in the freezer.

Heck he is probably ridding a masher bull rounding up all the spike bulls for his buddies! :chuckle:
