what's your favorite part of the hunt?
« on: November 02, 2008, 12:14:30 AM »
Mine is when the first hint of orange sun creeps over the water peeking around the cold well placed dekes floating in the water, fog hovering and the sound of whistling wings landing in front of you.  nothing you can do as it's still too dark to shoot but the shuffle of rubber boots on the floor of the aluminum boat and the smell of coffee in the blind brings back memories every time I think of it.

i think seeing my set up work the way i planned it is  the best part.  seeing them cup their wings and hearing them tear through the wind  with their landing gear down is unbeatable.

I would have to say spending time with my dad and friends in the blind takes the #1 spot, but when the ducks are coming in and the landing gear goes down and the wings cup, thats a very close second. And hopefully this year fooling some geese with some homemade dekes.

oh yeah and of course the shooting part is pretty sweet too.

Seeing the dogs work...................got love a creature that will swim for a duck (cold a$$ water) and want nothing more then to do it again.

I LOVE to see the birds fully commit.  Flaps out, Gear down and heading right for the decoys.

I know I did my job right then.    :chuckle:

Getting set up before the sunrise, just getting there has been our problem all year.

The best for me is seeing guys hit long shots from birds we miss in our spread.  I just like to see the ducks drop from high, takes skill for long shots.

Don't get me wrong we wait till they commit, but for some reason this year we've missed probably about 20 birds in the spread.  But hit some on their way out, weirdest thing ever.
That's why it's called hunting and not killing.

Nope sorry not a westsider.   :IBCOOL:

I'll rephrase, I don't sky bust, but I do take longer shots then most.  I like to see 30-40 yard tough shots being made not the 60-80 yards, like buzz bombing teal at the outside of the spread dropping at 50 mph, or the bufflehead F18's comin in hot outside the dekes and dropping the one you picked.

It works out for me.   :IBCOOL:

My favorite part of waterfowl hunting is seeing the wonder and amazement in my 7 year-old son's eyes when we hear those first whistling wings in the early light as the ducks come tumbling into the pond. That time with my boy is priceless.

Getting all settled into the blind as shooting light approaches and looking at my lab and seeing her lock her sights too the sky above and and hearing those whistling wings sweep over head and seeing big greenheads cup and commit. Don't how many times seeing my lab lock to the sky has saved me from getting busted!!

Watching my brother in law flail around the boat when a duck swoops right over us.  :chuckle:
