Island Deer
« on: October 25, 2013, 09:00:08 PM »
I was walking out to a mowing job this morning where I left the tractor yesterday.  As I walked along the road, I saw a flash/flicker of white up ahead along the edge of the wild roses.  At first I thought it was a bird, but then realized it was a deer flicking its tail.  I decided to see how close I could get and maybe get a cell phone pic.  I managed to get about 11 yards away before it realized something was up.   Here's what I saw.  Sorry for the poor quality.

Now, having seen this picture, you can imagine that I could easily have drawn a bow or gun and been ready when this guy stepped out.  This is definitely one of the bigger deer I have seen out here.  He is, of course, in a large no hunting allowed area.   :(  He didn't stick around too long after seeing me though.   :chuckle:

These sightings are hopefully keeping my daughter's spirits up in hope of a buck for late muzzleloader.

My son and I had a small forkie walk right up to us today. We were sitting on a hill over looking pasture on Shaw Island. We spotted him but no shot at 35yds. He continued straight to us out of site. Popped his head up at 7ft. My son wasn't ready to shoot. We sat frozen as he tried to figure us out for a good 30 seconds. It was awesome. He missed a head shot as he tried to sneak out at 5yds. Sealed the deal 20 min later with a doe.

Congratulations on your son's deer.  You are the first person I have heard of that hunts Shaw.  It can be tougher out here than many realize, especially if you are after a buck.

I swear, if you are singing a song, skippng down the road with your dog at your side, the deer will just stand there and watch you go by, but man, start sneaking and skulking around, boom, gone.   :chuckle:
