Drones to track game
« on: October 26, 2013, 07:16:14 AM »
Personal consumer Drones have progressed to an amazing level recently; note the DJI Phantom. It carries a GoPro camera and can be configured with a wireless radio to stream a live video to special glasses or a tablet PC. Since they are equipped with GPS they can send the coordinates right to you. They use electric motors so they are relatively quiet. Do you know if they are legal to use for hunting in Washington? Has anyone tried to use one? They are very easy to fly.
A DJI drone costs around $500. The GoPro camera is $200 more and the WiFi radio with glasses is about $300. For about $1000 you can fly one over fields, wooded areas, etc. and spot potential game. Then you can move towards the spot, stalk the game, and take your shot.

Well I guess that answers that question. It was a great idea though. Thanks.

Rosscrazyelk you got a point. It would depend on the legal definition of air craft.

When the law was written, this wasnt a consideration.  Might be worth calling and finding out. Not a help where I hunt.

Looks pretty clear according to the Washington legal definition of aircraft:

 (2) "Aircraft" means any contrivance now known, or hereafter invented, used or designed for navigation of or flight in the air.
