first time tree stand hunter
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:22:29 AM »
Just looking for any words of wisdom or advice for my first tree stand hunt. I am going to be up in 49 degrees north for late archery. I went up Saturday and got my stand hung and 3 cameras put out. We hunted this same spot last year and when I was tracking the buck I shot, I came across this trail that was heavily used. I am picking up a fall restraint soon and will be diligent in wearing it. I have added a few pictures to show ya my view

:chuckle:Lot's of thoughts that could be shared. Here's one. Make sure you can pull back quietly with the extra clothes you'll likely be wearing compared to still hunting.
Also, pack plenty of handwarmers! All day sits can get a little chilly.

I will be practicing shooting from my second story deck down into the yard with my jacket and gloves on to make sure I am ready. I also did some mock draws when i was up there but it will be different when I actually have my bow in my hand

How tall? I would put up more than 40 feet tall.  Good luck.

I hunt anywhere from 15 - 30 days a year in a treestand.  Everytime I go up or down I always take a minute to gather my thoughts, call it a pre-game routine ritual if you will.  At 25' high there is zero margin of error.  Take your time, gather your thoughts, and make sure your bulky clothing (worn it late season) doesnt get caught on pegs or ladder steps.  Full body safety harness is a must.  Have fun and enjoy, no better view in the woods then being up in a tree.

How tall is my stand? I would say about 15 feet and I don't think I would want/need it to be any higher...

I agree Hoyt and will be very careful climbing up and down my stand. I am always cautious as I have fallen out of a few trees when I was little and learned my lesson.

Toe Warmers stuck on your chest kidneys thighs and toes outside a base thermal layer will allow you to sit through bitter cold and still be able to draw your bow.
Good luck,
Mike
