Blues Bull down!
« on: October 27, 2013, 10:53:43 PM »
Spotted this bull two days before opening day when I was scouting, he was still in the same spot three days later. We seen this bull at 7:30 am and three miles later, some seriously steep country and a creek crossing we were in position at noon. It was so hot the elk weren't moving until late, but since we were so low and on a North slope. I was hoping he would come out of the dark timber early. At 2:30 we could here him moving through the brush but he was still in the dark timber. Finally at 4:00 he fed out into the open at 244 yards. We watched him for a few minutes and took in just how awesome of an animal he was.....and maybe to let my breathing slow down so I could quit shaking. With two quick shots he was done and rolled about 120 yards down the hill. The fall was pretty violent, taking chunks out of his antlers and breaking an inch or so off one brow tine, but it could have been worse. I have hunted elk for around 10 years and have seen a number of large bulls, but this bulls body was truly massive. His teeth were wore down and his hooves were huge. Definitely an old warrior judging by the scars on his shoulders. It was me and my girlfriend so caping him and quartering him was a job, not to mention how steep it was. At 8:30 pm we started the six mile hike up to the truck with the horns on my back. We lost the trail around midnight and were dog tired so we spent the night around a nice fire on a pine bough bed. Romantic I know!! lol Needless to say I did not get any sleep getting up every 30 or 45 mins to stoke the fire. At daylight we found the trail and were to the top at noon, thanks to the help of my dad and a great friend who relieved us of our packs a mile and a half from the top. The next day we left three hours before the horses to get the meat and cape packed across the creek to the trail. Lucky for us some friends were there early for the spike hunt with horses and said they were "there" if we needed them. Thank GOD for horses or we would still be there!! We figure between the two trips it was 24 miles of walking getting him out, but was well worth it. It took 13 points for me to draw this tag, we roughly scored him out at 347 before the drying period, with a 7x7 main frame and a kicker on one side. Thanks to everyone and the horses that made this happen, it truly was a hunt of a life time.
