Whitetails near Pomeroy in rut?
« on: October 28, 2013, 08:09:25 PM »
My Dad has a late tag for whitetails south of Pomeroy. He is heading over on the 9th. Just want to know if anyone has seen any rutting activity?

Last week saw a muley buck head down nose out chasing some does. Have seen several this week but no signs of rut.  Have seen some lone wt bucks this week (all in the dark). At the end of modern season several guys mentioned that some harvested bucks were showing some sign of rut. Things have gotten cold. Went from 40s overnight to 25 last night.

From my experience the whitetail rut around there is right about thanksgiving. If it was my tag, I would wait for the 2nd weekend to head over. There will be a big difference in rut activity :twocents:

When I was in the Tucannon for my late Muley hunt in 2010 the whitetails were full on in the rut. It would have been the weekend before thanksgiving. They were chasing hard. I think the last half of our hunt this year will be the best for rut action. You won't have any problem finding deer, rut or no rut.

All I have seen, the whitetails aren't even interested yet.  They will be starting about the time you are there though.  Muleys are just getting into it themselves.

We have a few guys we could ask, but we like to hunt up in the timber more than the fields.

It seems like everytime we go the second week we wish we would have went the first week. Then when we go the first week we wish we went the second week.  :dunno: Either way, Should be able to get a nice buck.

Keep an eye on the weather.  Its 65ish out.  That wont help move things along.  Muley rut has stalled.

Mule deer rut should be the second week of November. Weather shouldn't matter. It happens the same time every year.

weather forecast for Pomeroy next week has lows in the 20s and highs in the low 40s. That should get things fired up I bet.

From my experience, the muley rut will be pretty much done by next Sunday (Nov. 10th).

The mule deer buck I killed on 11/22 a few years ago was chasing a doe when I shot him. I agree they were pretty much done, but still chasing....maybe a post-rut situation. The whitetails were still getting after it.
I really think we'll see the whitetail rut heat up good around the 12th-15th  down there. I'm hoping sooner because I'll be down there with a whitetail tag in my pocket too.

If the weather guessers are right there could be 2-6" of snow in the forest boundry area.

Will be over there on the 11th, for a week. Hope they are hot and heavy. I would like to kill a big buck, but never shot a whitetail before so first decent rack i see will be eating dirt.
