Help with a Cowiche Cow hunt

My stepfather who is 76 years old got drawn for a cow tag in Cowiche and here is the problem.  I am a deer hunter and never hunted Cowiche and my step father isn't able to get around really well.  He can hike (Walk) a couple hundred yards into the woods if it is level but he can't hike to get out in the woods..

If anyone can help me with an area where he would have a high probability of getting a shot at an elk or if there are any landowners that are willing to allow him access to your property.  I really want to help him fill his tag as he would be really tickled.  I would be willing to consider any type of reimbursement for your assistance.

I live in the unit and all I can say is good luck if he can only get a few hundred yards off the road. The whole unit gets hammered during modern season and those elk are run all over hell and back. Could maybe try getting some permission from someone off of cowiche mill rd but I wouldnt know where to start, those people out there scare me.

That public land sagebrush has been hammerd harder than ever. I was in there yesterday with a friend and saw zero elk where they normally are, my brother said it was like walking through the fair over the weekend with all the people. Lots of elk to the west on the private land right now tho.

My hubbie is in that area but has poor cell signal right now.  I will see if he can help when he checks in tonight or tomorrow.  Advice of seeing something on Mill rd is sound just watch for private property signs.

Been in there with a buddy and they got a spike first day and NO elk since.  they just are not in there now so just keep with it as it can change in a few days.  I would say your best bet is park the rig where you can see for ever and stick it out all day long and hope someone runs something your way.  considering the lack of elk and the limitations that may be your best bet.  good luck

I know his limitations make it tough.  I would like nothing more than to push him up the hills to get off the beaten paths.

Honestly if he can't hike very far then he'd probably be better off just giving them gas. Seriously I would just drive him around all day. There's a lot of elk in the unit, there is bound to be a cow cross in front of you

myself, my wife, my son and his friend (all avid deer hunters) will be there with my step dad.  We could easily be his bird dogs.  We will do what we can to get him his elk.

I Hunted modern firearm there a few weeks ago and saw more cow elk that anything else. I've only been up there once so I will try and explain this the best I can. When your driving in on mill road you will come to a bridge a few hundred yards before it turns into private land. Well there is a small turn off spot to park right there. I hiked up the side of that hill and there is a pretty nice draw with a lot of trees. I saw 10 cow elk in there. The reason i'm bringing this up is because from the draw you can look up on top of the hill and there is a building with a road. *probably forest service look out or something* anyways if you could get up on that road early enough you could glass that hole draw and see if any guys will be pushing elk up that draw from mill road. I never looked on the map to see where that road is or if it even has access, If it does i think it would be a pretty decent spot. Hope that helps a bit. Good luck!!

We hunted Cowiche mill road today and nothing but big bulls.  Pushed one of the bulls within 50 yards of stepdad.  Where there are bulls there are cows.

Drove Hatton road and won't go back.  Don't care for being confronted by someone with a gun.
