Sneaky Blacktail
« on: October 30, 2013, 03:31:18 PM »
After spending the first two weeks of the season hunting, I finally connected with this guy.  With the lack of deer in the cuts where I was hunting, I focused on hunting the thick stuff.  I was creeping down an old overgrown skid road infested with blackberries and eight foot tall alder, when I heard brush moving towards me.  He stepped out into an opening less than thirty feet from me.   His nose was on the ground and he never saw me until I punched him behind the front shoulder.   This was at 11:30 AM.  I am amazed every year how sneaky blacktail can be.

It is nice to see someone put the hammer down on those sneaky blacktails.  Nice buck - persistence pays off.

That pic is from my backyard.  I took off the orange for the picture.  I hate to look like a jack-o-lantern unless I am om the hunt.  The beastie was slain in a really overgrown twelve to fourteen year old cut.  It is not my preferred terrain to hunt, but I know that there are bucks there.  The trick (which for me is not often accomplished in that kind of stuff) is not to get busted.  Movement, smell and noise is rarely on the hunters side in heavy brush.  I just got lucky.
