I and one of my operarators were working on equip. in the mashell unit today when a guy stops by our job, he has a small 4 pt. bull cut in half, full of dirt, wants to know if we know what to do with him to keep him from spoiling, the guy was from everett, hide is still on we clean up best we could, pulled the hide off and sent him on his way, hope all turns out well but could not believe this guy could not figure it out on his own.

Nobody is born knowing everything, and yes we do need new hunters, and yes we should be willing to help educate the ones that are not fortunate enough to have been taught a lifetime worth of skills and knowledge. Take pride in the fact you shared with a less knowing hunter and probably impressed them. Every hunter starts somewhere and you just gave a couple of them a good start. They will probably remember you for a long time.

I agree. While frustrating to run into someone who is totally clueless.......... actually irresponsible you pretty much have to help. I wouldn't have done anything though. I would have told them what to do and why.

I wasnt born knowing much other than eat sleep and crap.On my first deer dad had me do it all,and explained how as I went on.Im always eager to help another hunter,kinda pay it foward thing.For the rest of someones life it will be remembered what was done that day for them.Yep theres idiots out there but are we all not one at least once in our life.Im Guilty

I remember when my cousin got his first elk, we were standing there as he was putting on his plastic gloves to keep the guts off of him and it was taking for ever, It was the first animal he had ever gutted. Afetr 30 min or so, he hadn't hardly made a cut and wimped out because it was messy, I finally stepped in and finshed the job in like 5-10 min. I couldn't stand to wait any longer

I agree that they should have been better prepared prior to ever setting foot in the woods but by you taking the time to assist you probably made a lifelong impression and imparted useful knowledge to some who were obviously in need; good on ya and keep up the positive representation.  

I would submit that you have to give them props for at-least getting out in the woods; in times like these when we are losing more hunters then we are gaining it's good to hear some newbies are taking up the challenge.  

Also letting them know that a website like this is available to answer alot of questions  prior to them going afield could help.

 Well said.  Growing up on a ranch you learn stuff, it just happens. On the other hand if your not exposed to things like that you may have an idea on WHAT needs to be done ,but no idea on HOW to do it. I dont mind showing guys how to do things ,but if they expect me to do it for them ,well no dice. I think the best way to learn something is to get right in the middle of it.

I would have most certainly helped them out.  Reading a book or watching a video on how to field dress a deer or elk isnt quite the same.  I do a lot of hunting alone, and lucky for me the first critter I shot was a deer that I could manage.  I didnt do a very good job, but have learned a little more each year since then.

For an inexperience person field dressing can be pretty intimating.. Lucky for me my dad showed me and let me do my first deer.. it was a mess but I learned. I'm now pretty good, but I still ask questions even today and sometimes I learn a new trick which makes it even easier. I think some just are to darn scared of the internals an get grossed out.

logger et all: I agree that we should help out, my hat goes off to logger for doing so. However, the freedom and right to hunt carries with it some responsibility. At the very least when a hunter goes out into the wilderness to hunt big game they should have some idea about what to do with the animal they may be harvesting. There are plenty of Field Dressing DVD's, web sites, and Hunting Washington buddies that can offer assistance, BEFORE you got out into the field. If we are going to hunt and be taken seriously we should exercise some responsibility in this regard. $1,000 for a gun, $500 for a scope, $600 for boots and camo clothing, $150 for gas: this guy couldn't spend $15 on a Field Dressing DVD?

Passing on good hunting ethics is something all hunters need to take pride in. Wheather you are passing it to a kid or someone who is less educated then yourself. Hunters need to make sure that they take the time to educate themselves before going into the woods, but if people like that are not doing the animal justice and the atnit's catch wind of this they use it against all of us. There is no excuse for being a dumb ass some people just can't help themselves, but you can help all of us by educating them on the right ways to take care of their animals.

No matter what their mentality is we need to help our fellow hunter's!!! Thanks for taking the time. I walked up to a guy in Clockum years ago that had just shot a Bull and he had no idea what to do? He didn't know how to gut an animal and didn't have a pack to get the meat out!!! WTF I spent the rest of the day helping him!!! Pay it forward.

Agree fully on assisting folks in those situations.  Had similar thing occur on a Bison Hunt, guy and his son shot one, they waved us over almost panicking.  They couldn't figure out how to get started, let alone clean it.  We stopped for a awhile, field butchered it and helped pack it into their truck, 100yards away. They were new to AK hunting but shot lots of Deer elsewhere and really didn't seem to grasp how big a Bison was or where to begin.  He gave us about 75lbs of meat, which we gave to our friend in Delta, we used his cabin to hunt from.  Ran into the same guy a year or so later at TGIF in Anchorage while on lunch, he picked up the tab.  Too cool..

I would do the same thing here in a second if I saw someone in the same dilemma.  Besides it is all about be a promoter of the outdoors.  Had they not had your assistance they might have quit hunting forever and switched to the tree huggers side of life.  Count it as a good deed done.  The Karma game gods will look out for you, well maybe, haven't seen too much of them this season....

A couple of years ago, when I was in Idaho, I ended up gutting, skinning and butchering about 7 deer for coworkers and first time hunters.  Thank goodness my wife put up with having animals hanging in the garage for that long.  She did say "NEVER AGAIN" though.  This year all of those that got them were able to do it by themselves.

I re read my post and realized I may have been a little harsh, the guy and his son were actually real nice guys. they payed real close attention to what we were doing, the only major problem was his knife it was one of those ones that you could gut an elephant with so we just used our pocket knifes.
