getting started trapping - tools I need?
« on: November 09, 2013, 01:31:15 PM »
Pretty well getting it figured out
I'll order some stuff here pretty soon, starting with wire muskrat stretchers and a beaver board pattern.
I think I'll freeze the cats though until I get some hands on help putting them up - hate to screw up good one  :chuckle:

Little at a time, won't see a lot on the leader boards from me just yet

I have a basic set of traps but notice I may not have everything I need yet,  also noticed my old waders were not going to work they were old and cheap rubber ones.

Pretty well decided I'm going to hit Cabela's for waders, need some for the boy and myself.  Settled *pretty* much on the neoprene.   Would they work and hold up OK sitting on an ATV?

My boy is growing like a weed though, not sure what he'll get he's 5'9 about 130 lbs slender.

for rats I have no stretchers,  got good recommendations? Any wire stretchers wil do. I use wood though. If you want to make some out of wood be sure and use a real soft wood like cedar. beaver I'm just going to use plywood and do rounds until I get back in the swing of things - been a long long time  :chuckle: See if you can get some patterns from NAFA or FHA.
cats - I have no boards, wire work good? Not sure I have seen a wire cat board for sale. Wood is the way to go.  knives - I have havalon and basic other knives but no specialty knife - is there a *must have* for rats?
Any kind of narrow blade. I use my pocket knife.  scrapers, fleshers? Won't reccommend a brand but you get what you pay for. Two handled fleshing knife is my choice. Most guys make there own beam.

again looking for a basic set getting started then I'll customize according to my needs.
