Anyone been to pot holes yet?
« on: November 03, 2008, 06:05:55 PM »
Is there enough water in the Potholes to run a 75 Hp prop and 18 foot boat without having any problems?

Don't know for sure but that would be a no to me :twocents:

One thing a person hunting the area now is good luck. The Winchester is so high you could launch about any boat south of I-90 on Dodson road. The water in both canals Winchester and Frenchman are the highest I've seen them in the last few years.
They're flooding the area and nothings froze with the water this high there's too many small ponds with cattails thick around them. The ducks just stay in the ponds, no reason to leave.
And damn the places are over ran with hunters. The pheasants are really getting it with with no ducks in site. I'm not saying you won't get any ducks I'm saying I haven't seen many ducks.
Hear from a group that hunts the river around Vantage and some haven't fired they're guns the last 4 times they've been out. I'm not saying everyones not getting ducks on the river either.

Well I'm trying real hard to keep from getting someone saying Tank your full of crap we killed the heck out of them.
But screw um you that know me knows I'm full of crap but when I post I give you an honest report before you drive for miles to get to your favorite spot. My favorite little honey hole island isn't there.
I go out in the morning and when there's no shooting I go back to camp no big deal. Where as you that has to drive very far, I would go to plan B.
An other thing is make sure your not on the wrong side of lease land. An Jo boat with jet drive is a good way to go.
Duck hunting sucks and well suck untill the water goes down or the small ponds freeze.
Hey,Iceman don't make the trip yet.

Not much happening. Went out 11-5-08 with a few friends and we got 5 geese, and 5 mixed bag of duck. Only one of the ducks was a mallard. It was an OK shoot, but very slow.

Just talked with Tank. Pot Holes is low. Mostly jets runninga few props. Both Tank and I want to know what the heck to make of this sign that has been posted at the Dept. boat site.
Stay out of water both humans and animals. Stay away from water that is bubbling on the surface.

Weird sign.  Did it look official or like someone was being funny?  How was the hunt this weekend?  I was over in the area looking at a duck boat in Moses Lake but since we didn't buy it, we never got to get out and see the potholes or wasteways.  Shot four mallards out of canals in the Quincy/George area with some local friends, but wasn't seeing many birds, except for sitting on Moses Lake.

spent a day scouting up there and saw hardly any birds(except in town).  The sign is to warn about blue-green algea that will kill dogs if they drink it.  avoid the stuff!
its slow and will stay that way until we get some real weather,

OK here is some information on the sign involving the blue-green algae. This stuff sure sounds nasty. Tank said he'll post a picture of the sign as soon as he can, but for now he's still in the area.

Here is a link showing the stuff floating on a body of water.

Tank called yesterday and told me that Winchester is going down and Pot Holes is going p s-l-o-w-l-y, but slowly can be quick depending on the precipitation in the area.

hey, i live here in moses lake. they started drainging the lake into the potholes a couple weeks ago so the water level should be much higher as the lake level has dropped quite a bit.

i have seen a large increase in bird numbers in the last few days with the weather we have had. if we get some good cold weather up north anytime soon hunting should start to get really good.

Don't get to excited, the numbers are not here yet! There are a few birds, but not "alot".
