Wolf in the Bumping?

Found a couple tracks in Bumping while Elk hunting last week.
Wolf?
Dog?
Cat?
That's a 9mm next to the track

Its not cat, they have the four toes in a half moon shape where as canines have the middle two toes forward. Also you have claws present, cats have retractable claws and normally you wont see them at all. Lastly, on the rear pad, canines have two lobes and cats have three lobes.

Heard them during early archery elk in the Goose Praire area

Not too hard to imagine, they have been spotted over by Rimrock lake as well.

You should go to the lake wenas area,my wife and I went walking around over there and we saw a lot of very large canine tracks by the creek where the lake is all drained off.either wolf or very large dogs with unkept claws.

I thought it was a dog at first, but its way back off the road and there weren't any human prints anywhere.  The tracks followed some Elk and Deer prints for quite a ways down a heavily used trail.  Only one set of prints from what I could tell.

I believe it, I've heard quite a few people say they've seen wolves in that proximity

You look at enough wolf tracks and you start to tell the difference from domestic dog to wolf - the wolf pads are always so much better defined for some reason.  I don't know if it's because they have so many miles on those feet they are stronger toe'd with tighter pads.   Domestics tend to have flatter pads, not so much thick calouses built up on the bottom.

other than that you really need to take pictures of the stride, and since wolves are narrow chested the width between the feet make it almost appear like they are stepping in a single line on purpose, you could almost lay a rope on the ground and touch all 4 feet during the stride.  On a big domestic dog the feet are a wider stance, and would land on each side of the rope an inch or two and not touch the rope,  domestics usually zig zag a lot more too.


It's not definitive by any means.

[/quote I agree,I was leaning toward the large dog.these tracks above also would have to say dog.without pics showing other tracks I say a lone dog.(but with the elk migrating to the LT. never say never I always say.

agreed. It's not a far stretch for them to get here.
