Finally!
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:46:41 PM »
Slow morning with the mild weather, but finally got some birds to work the decoys.  Only came away with a gadwall but it was just awesome watching birds cup and and do their thing.

Side note:  Stood up to take em' and I downed my bird while I wondered why my hunting buddy wasn't shooting at the second bird…."I went to squeeze the trigger and the dang safety was still on."

Just another blind story that makes duck hunting fun. :)

Your grey duck sure looks pinny!  Just be thankful you didn't shoot a limit of seven of them as the limit is two of them.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Thanks for the pics LOVEMYLABXS.  Great education opportunity for me.  As someone pointed out, need to pick up my game as far as ID goes.  Would have not been bueno to shoot more Pintail than allowed.

Easiest two ways to tell if you have a gadwall:

1.  Bill:  gadwalls have an orangish bill with spotty black on top.  Sort of like someone got the nozzle on the rattle can all gunked up.
2.  Open the wing.  If there is a brown bar it's a gadwall.

In-flight look at the neck; the pintail’s neck is considerably longer than a gadwall’s.

Kiltit glad it helps. I get out a lot but got to say I don't kill a lot. The public land I hunt can be real hit and miss. I have a lot of days of never even reaching for the shotgun but then again I have one of those days where everything goes right and I know I maybe getting older but another day like that could be just around the bend so I just got to be out there when it does. Most of the time I can tell from how they fly to necks or even the shape of the wing what I got coming in but because I don't put a ton of birds in my hands sometimes just like you I'm not real sure of what I got , gads, widgons and pintail hens can look a lot alike heck early in the year you may think you shot a mallard hen only to find out when it's in your hand it's a drake that just ain't colored out yet.  Just remember if you're not sure in the field what you have ( look it up when you get home) just pick your shots at birds that you're sure of,,, oh say like mallard drakes with bright green heads. You might not kill as many birds but it's sure alot less expensive then if the GW shows up to tell you what you got over the limit........

ENJOY YOUR TIME AFIELD

Mike

Well one duck is better than no ducks!
Way to go....

I like that spot your in
Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."
