Question what to do
« on: November 10, 2013, 05:36:42 PM »
I was hunting the Stella area and came across an elk hide with the head still attached only the horns where removed sawed off. Should I have reported this or is this normal? East of the Mountain they ( Warden) told us we had to keep the head for proof and the sex on the body for proof. So any thoughts?? Thank you. Been bugging me..

By all means you should report this they might be able to take a dna and if they find some horns do like wise.

They still may have left the proof of sex on by leaving his genitals intact, it is possible to leave them while gutting the animal.  I often go gutless because of the area I hunt in, and will saw off the antlers before I leave there is allot of stuff that is left behind that is just dead weight I usually just leave some skin attached with the genitals on the rear quarter incase I have any issues.

Doesn't sound like there's anything to report. Nothing illegal about it. What do you do with that stuff after you get it home and get it processed? Do you expect someone to save the hide and head in their freezer? For how long? Don't waste the game warden's time with something like that.

People throw that stuff out all the time, rather than bury it. It feeds the critters in the winter time.

I never pack out an elk hide anymore, and if not getting the head mounted, why keep all that extra weight of a head and cape? When hauling out the horns, I saw through the top of the skull from the back through the eye sockets. And the horns only get loaded on the very last trip out.
Cheers!
