Good weekend of deer hunting. Late Tag 2013
« on: November 10, 2013, 10:32:05 PM »
My dad and I tagged a couple nice bucks this weekend. On the first day of our hunt we saw deer every where but just a couplesmall bucks. I had only the morning to hunt then had to go get my son. Then I was able to go out in the evening. While I was gone my dad and uncle spotted a 4pt buck a ways away but were not sure how big it was. They saw it go into a cove and figured he bedded down. So when I got back to hunt we went to check it out. We got to the ridge that was about 400yds from the cove. We glassed it for a few minutes and spotted the buck in the weeds. We watched it for a while and my dad decided he might want to shoot it. We put a plan together an my dad and uncle went after it. They worked their way around to the deer. They got 60 yds from the deer before they could see It. My dad had to belly crawl up the hill a bit to get a shot. At that point a doe blew out of the weeds. The buck stood up and my dad dicided he wanted it. He shot hit it in the front shoulders, it ran down to the bottom of the draw and stopped. He shot again and dropped it. One down one to go.  :IBCOOL:  After we got it to the truck we went to a different area. We got to the top of the ridge and saw a buck so we went to get a closer look. Saw some littl bucks and headed back as it was getting close to dark. On our way we saw three deer run out of a draw and one looked to be a good buck I got in position and the buck ran over the hill :bash: . The next time we see him he is 700yds away an its getting dark so we head to the truck went home. Sunday we went to the same area hoping to see him again we glassed all morning and saw alot of deer but no shooter bucks so we went to get some lunch. When we went back out I figured the buck was bedding on the river so we went up on top of some bluffs and glassed the river bottom. Saw a bunch of does but no bucks. We decided we would move to where we thought the buck was traveling to get to the crp from the river. We sat there and glasses for a while saw some more does. We kept glassing and my dad says there are a couple deer just in the grass of the river bottom. I found them and one was a good buck I ranged it at 305yds and got into shooting position. He the walks back in to the trees. So we sit and wait. My dad spots him again in a small opening and I dicided I was going to shoot and he walks out of sight again so we wait. A couple minutes later he stepped out into the open and walked along the edge of the tall grass and I ranged him at 302. When he stopped I squeezed the trigger an dropped him in his tracks. :IBCOOL: when we get down to him he was even better than I thought. He was a 5x6 with character and 5 7/8 bases. I feel fortunate to have the chace to harvest this nice buck.

I saw no real signs of the rut like I did last year how about you? We didn't see a lot of bucks and the ones we did were by themselves for the most part or with other bucks. Both buck we got were with does but didn't show any real interest in them. To bad you are not hunting this weekend in the past the second weekend of the hunt the bucks are getting more active.

The buck I screwed the pooch on Tuesday was chasing does. He was probably about the size of the 1st one you posted.  I passed him on Monday, regretted it, went back up Tuesday looking for him and found him. He was the only buck I saw of any size, and the only mature buck I saw that had any interest in does. We did see a few of the young whitetails with their nose to the ground pretty hot and heavy on the trail of the does. The mule deer were all in...rutting, lip curling, chasing, etc. Just running around stupid. Tons of fun to watch.
I definitely should have took the 2nd weekend off. Initially I had the whole season off. Crazy stuff happened with work and they needed me to come back. If I knew it was going to go that way, I would have swapped, but it was too late and I can't screw around with my job.

Life gets in the way sometimes. Sounds like you had a good time even though it didn't pan out the way you wanted. I drew the Wenaha west tag two years ago and had a fun hunt but the weather was to nice and we didn't see any of the bucks we saw scouting. We only saw 5 deer and three were 2pts it was still fun just getting out their and hunting anyways.
