My sons first buck
« on: November 11, 2013, 04:56:19 PM »
I have already posted a couple pictures on the late tag thread but thought I would follow up with a short story and a couple of more pics.
First of all I want to thank all the members who helped out with tips on where to look for the migrating bucks. I am familiar with the unit but just didn't want to waste much time as we were limited on how much he could hunt.
My son had a late quality tag and only had about 2 1/2 days to hunt as he is going to college. We might have been able to squeeze another weekend in next weekend but as you can see that is no longer needed.
I showed up on Friday early am ahead of him to get camp set up and do a little scouting. He had a test early that am before he left so he and a couple college buddies didn't show up until around noon. After they quickly changed into hunting clothes we took off. The area we wanted to go first was a no go due to the very thick fog so we had to go a little higher. After a couple hour hike with only a few deer spotted we decided to check out another area. It was a short road in a burn area. We stopped at end of road and decided to hike an old skid road. 5 minutes in my son spots a nice buck but not quite what he was looking for. Right after that we spotted another buck but before we could get a good look at him I spotted this one looking directly at us 75 yards above the skid road. My son got set up but missed the first. He turned and was quartering away when he shot again. This one hit the mark and after a very short track we found him. One more kill shot and we were done. So less than 3 hours into first day of his hunt he shoots a great buck. Awesome color and mass and about 26" wide. Forks aren't the deepest so won't score the greatest but score was not an issue. He just wanted a good looking buck and we feel this one is perfect.

Yes it looks like he is a very mature buck. A roman nose, lots of scars on his face and about half an ear missing.

Thanks for the comments guys. Just did a rough score somewhere in the mid 160's. Not the deepest forks but great mass. Most mass measurements 4 1/2-5 1/2". It's going to look great on the wall.
