Toutle Cow tag Modern Firearm one week from today
« on: November 11, 2013, 05:04:34 PM »
Hi folks, first post on this board as I am a new member. My dad (65) and myself (41) drew toutle cow tags for next Mondays opener. Not looking for any secrets as we have scouted the North end pretty well. Just wanted to see how the modern firearm bull tag holders have done that are just finishing up? Getting excited, havent got a cow since the last one in my profile pic from Yale back in 2006.
Aim well, breathe and make the shot count.

Congrats on the tag, you drew it about 10 yrs too late though.  There are still elk there, many of which have hoof rot.  Hopefully you can fill your tag on a healthy cow.

why not shoot one with rot? nothing at all wrong with them except the hoof is ugly...
good luck on the hunt! shouldn't be too hard to fill

Filled three of four modern bull tags. I would go look around the 135 rd. Seen cows there everyday.

The hoof rot goes up into the meat in some cases.  Smells nasty!  I wouldn't eat it if somebody paid me.  Not all of them have it, but I'd say 75% of the elk I've seen in the toutle unit have it.

ive killed 3 bulls in coweeman with hoof rot and never noticed anything strange or weird about the meat at all... I have no problem taking an elk with hoof rot.

1 rear hoof looked kind of like a club, the other 3 were normal.

.243 my favorite rifle! Some haters say its not enough for an Elk, but my 1 shot kill proves otherwise.  ;)

Nice! I have a uncle that killed a 360" Oregon bull with one shot from a .243 M77.

:yeah:
Tack drivers yes, but in larger calibers they kick like a mule! :yike:
My cousin has a 30.06 that's nicknamed the bone crusher because of what it does to your shoulder. :chuckle:

What rifle?
