Late Season Whitetail Down

Took off for a weekend in Colville, Wa. Me and my college roommate. Hopes where high and we were excited to be hunting the area for the first time. We scouted all day friday ,at places we picked out on maps days before and decided on a spot for the opener. It had snowed before our arrival so there was a good 6 inches of crunchy loud snow for us to try and be quite in. Well that didn't happen! It was just to loud and we ended up busting a doe and buck. Never got a look at the buck but knew he was there because of his tracks. After a long day of hunting until dark which was 4:30! not enough time in the day at all. We took a sketchy shower at the kettle falls truck stop. Felt nice scrubbed up in some un scented body wash and went to bed for the next day of hunting. We got lower and out of the snow this day but again didn't have very much luck not even a doe to be seen. To make the story short we woke up monday morning even with morale low feeling great. We pull the truck up to the spot we are going to park and the national anthem comes on! We looked at each other and said this is awesome lets do it for the Veterans, lets do it for all the dads, moms, uncles, aunts and cousins who allow us to hunt every day. Thats exactly what we did. We head straight up the mountain in thick forest still pitch black. We gain about 500 feet of elevation and sit tight. After sitting a couple hours we decide to move up higher, with fresh sign i continue to head up the mountain and head to a big gulch. I am moving very slow and i spot a deer body at the bottom.
Binos up and its confirmed deer but cant put horns on the animal. Right at this moment the fog rolls in thick and i loose sight of the deer. At this im crawling to try and get in a better position but its not looking like ill be able to get much closer. The fog clears up and now the deer is in the thick brush bedded down. I am looking at it and still cant confirm horns. About 15 minutes pass by of me constantly checking for horns. Finally a commercial jet flys over and stands the deer up. The deer moves his head and YES its a buck. Using the jet as cover noise i stand up and take a free hand 100 yard shot straight down at the deer and miss. He doesnt know what happened and begins a slow walk. Reload and smack lung shot.He went no further than 20 yards smacked a tree really hard and hit the dust. He was a 3 point with eye guards. My first whitetail and i completed a personal goal of shooting all the deer species consecutively in washington. Blacktail 2011,muledeer2012,and whitetail2013. Overall great hunt and id like to thank the veterans for giving me freedom and opportunity to enjoy my passion.
To my team members on team whackayote ill be doing some of that next
