Just curious if anyone was successful today in Hancock? Buddy of mine shot a nice 3 pt opening day. I'll be taking the wife out here in a few hours to hopefully fill her tag:) if you see a green Chevy Silverado with a vortex sticker on the back window, stop and say hi! Good luck to everyone!!!!

I'll be curious to see how it's going myself, was going to spend the last 3 days of rifle out there but my daughters boyfriend ran over our lab last night. I've been up most the night helping her,( kc the lab), low rider car so I had to get a jack and lift the car to get kc out!  X rays said no broken bones but she's not using her back legs and looks horrible. Love those big vet bills before Christmas, the people at the sumner vet hospital were very nice though.   Back to your topic, hopefully we here some good reports.  I plan to be going for the afternoon hunt I hope! Good luck hunters!!

x2 for the sumner emergency vet. A year or so ago I had to take my bloodhound down there in the middle of the night. The people working were very helpful when I told them that I couldn't afford the massive amount of money they wanted to keep her over night. The gave her a couple IV's to get her threw the night until I could take her to my vet in yelm

There is at least one less 4x4 roaming the woods!  They are rutting hard, lots of road hunters but I walked mine up, good luck to the rest of you, should be perfect weather!

Good to hear! We saw 2 does today. Not what I was really hoping for but seeing deer is better than not. Hopefully in the morning we have better luck.

No deer here. Saw a dandy 3x4 opening morning at 6:34 a.m., exactly 6 minutes before legal shooting hours. It was 20 yards away in the road acting all goofy like we were not even there. Watched it for 45 seconds or longer.

Other than that, no bucks and unlike last year, hard to even find a deer. My wife and I, together, have seen 17 in the two days and that is a lot of hard hunting and some driving.

Today, after a short hike through a clearcut, I attempted to sling my rifle up on my shoulder and, wouldn't you know it, the little brass screw deal that holds the sling together had fallen out. My rifle fell to the ground and lit directly on the scope breaking the rear eye piece and reticle completely off. That pretty much left just my wife to hunt from 10:00 on.

49 years old and probably nearly 40 years of handling guns and that is the first gun that has been in my direct possession that I have dropped :bash:

I spent my last two hours ever in Hancock today. That place is crazy. I cannot believe that I spent, again, that kind of money to hunt a place that has almost no huntable timber and is overrun by hunters. Public land has less hunters than that and it is free to hunt.

Wife and I left there early. I came home and watched football then of to Riffe Lake area tomorrow where I can hunt the way that hunting was meant to be, quiet, wholesome, and away from people and roads.

Seriously, they should put in stop lights at the major intersections up there.

 Asta :hello:

1,200

I do not not mean to sound like sour grapes, not that at all. Last year my wife killed a dandy buck in there.

There are deer and some good bucks, just not my cup of tea. There are other places to hunt that compare with that and do not cost other than the fact that I would have to drive further.

Good luck to those who continue searching for a vacant landing.

I like to hunt the wildlife escapement areas that are gated, although I got my deer this year off one of the mainlines.  I do admit that this year seemed like  a lot more hunters than years past.

I agree also. Heading into the gate this morning we were in a line of at least 15 trucks :bash: and that was around 6:15 am. Can't imagine how many more were already in the gate and ahead of us.

You have to remember, we have lost half of Buckley to Muckleshoot, all of Eatonville unless you buy separate permit, and i swear some of those 'work permits' are hunting too, maybe im mistaken.  I think 1200 is way too many permits for the amount of land, it seems to have gotten more crowded every year for the last 5 or so.  I also think this year was worse in late season because so few guys got deer in the early season due to poor conditions.  Also, as the cost goes up, more guys will try to "get there moneys worth" and buy tags for the wife, etc and keep on hunting even after they tag out, nature of the beast unfortunately.

And to add to it there is not that many deer up there.  I hunt very hard, hike, bike, road hunt and glass a lot and I am lucky to find a few does in a day up there or zero during the day today.  And only does never any bucks.  My trail cameras say the same.  Very little amount of deer in my opinion after two seasons up here I am not impressed at all.  Yes there are way too many people up there also.

Congrats JC! Awesome buck!

There are some stud bucks on the tree farm. And a huge area to hunt. That said, I can't believe what meager amounts of deer sign we've found in most of South Kapowsin. Elk sign (and elk) tons; deer sign (and deer) few and far between.

And yes, it's pretty much all un-huntable reprod, or wide-open clear-cut. Not much for huntable timber left, imo

Clutch went out on my truck, so my son and I missed the whole 4 days of late buck. :bash: :bash:

Well went out yesterday with a buddy to help try and get his 9 year old son his first buck. Decided to go into Buckley gate and didn't see not one deer. We spent all day up there and saw a few trucks and that was it. Even did some walking and still didn't see a deer. Ooh well maybe next year!

There's a few bucks in there, I hate to say this, but I missed a BIG 4X4 on Saturday morning. This is the first time I've been on Hunt WA all week. I haven't wanted to even see pics of late buck deer. Still just sick that I missed, but I'll get over it. ( I hope )

my daughter shot her first deer in hancock, we hunt the scott turner side, i dont road hunt, i am always walking somewhere, well sneaking i guess, i saw some grouse and in 4 days of huntn, i saw a total of 8 deer, i passed on a small spike x 2pt, and a kid i have been taking, also his first year missed a stud of a buck, i so wanted to put that buck on the deck, but it was kellans first year huntn he is 13 or 14 and i get just as jacked up watchn kids get critters, sad to say he missed badly and he also missed a nice 2pt on halloween, i try to tell him the oh crap factor will play hell n you when your shootn at something alive. i have watched the numbers over the years dwindle big time on hancock, at now on the eatonville side they bumped it up to 300 permits and raised the price... it isnt even big enough to support the 200 permits and now they raise it to 300 and the price, UMM NOPE, i didnt renew, going back to public land, i gotta find a place that isnt to overrun that i can get back to camping in the walltent with my son and daughter and kellan, much more fun anyways than the madhouse of roadhunters that seem to be overrunning hancock...good luck all
